Mac Software Problem

I thought I'd post a quick thread before I killed my mac. My new-ish iMac has been doing some kinda odd things lately. It seems to have slowed down somewhat and I have a few more program crashes than usual. One major problem is that iPhoto has died on me completely. When I open the program file all I get is the iPhoto menu bar up top. That's it! No photos or main screen at all. Also it won't even close. The same problem is now occouring with Ableton Live. I have tried installing iPhoto from the OS x disks but no joy.

Does anybody know if this is a knows problem? I've done all the usual stuff... hardware test, run Onyx and so on, but I'm afraid this issue is going to get worse.

My last resort is to reinstall OS x or take it back to the retailer (3 store). What do yiz think?

    Cheers!

Sure, rebuild the machine and see if it works better. You always have a year to return it if it's a dodgy computer.

I reinstalled my system 4 times so I knew how to set it up the way I liked. I was new to OSX, and wanted a well tuned machine. It does no harm to rebuild. First port of call for weird software glitches like that alright.

Sounds like it's almost certainly a software problem. Have you been installing a lot of 3rd party software lately? Anything that might be interfering with the system?

I assume you've used Disk Utility to scan the hd, repair permissions, etc?

Check Activity Monitor and see if there's anything unusual running in the background that might be using too much CPU, RAM, etc.

And I'd recommend a certain degree of caution with Onyx. It's not as safe as it used to be. The basic cleaning functions are fine but some of the more obscure ones have to the potential to really f**k up your system. Unless you understand exactly what it's doing don't use it all.

Just did an upgrade to Leopard. Still have the same issues though. Looks like I'll have to do a fresh install.

    Thanks.
