Stock Trading online - delayed prices

When you buy stock with an online account (scott trade etc) are the prices real time or delayed? If they are delayed does that mean you buy the stock at the delayed (displayed price) or how does it work. This is probably a very stupid question but that's the way some simulators work. Thanks, Mike
