Debating

DIT are trying to establish a debating team to compete in the Mace competition. There is no debating society in DIT this year so they are trying to find people who would be interested in it to join. It would be disappointing for DIT not to be represented in one of the largest competitions in Ireland.

Below is section of the email I recieved detailing the competition. If anyone is interested please PM me as the closing date has passed so we need to act fast.

The Irish Mace is the National Debating Championships and runs throughout the year and every year the winners compete against the English, Welsh and Scottish Champions to be crowned International Mace Champions. The International Mace is the oldest and most prestigious competition on these islands and has been won by Irish teams four times in the last seven years.

The competition is for teams of two and runs in British Parliamentary style.
Four teams compete in each round, two in favour of a motion and two against.
The motion will be made available a week or more before the debate to allow
for research but the speakers will not know which side they are on until
fifteen minutes before the debate begins.

The Mace rewards research and quick thinking, preparation and analysis,
oratory and engagement. After each round we retire to a nearby pub where you can get to know your fellow competitors and receive feedback from our
experienced judges and at the end of the year there is the black-tie Grand
Final where all the competitors converge to see who will be crowned National
Champions before retiring to a lavish reception.

For anyone who has never debated before please find attached a handbook on the rules and format of the debates, note that the www.irishmace.com website has further instructions on the format and most importantly do try to come to the workshop on the 1st of November in UCD.

Hope to meet some of you in the near future

OH PLEASE there has to be SOMEONE in DIT who would consider giving debating a go!

Maybe I marketed it wrong...I'll try again!

Debating is cool, its what all the cool kids do!...it will get you girls/boys cuz being all over that sort of **** is sexy!

    How about now???

We only need 3 more people....its not a life long committment here people! You can get over the social stigma and abuse with time! Flights are cheap these days and access to all the countries as an Irish citizen is much easier.

stop bumping the thread. the forum isn't nearly populated enough for it to drop down to page 2 anytime soon.

also, have you tried advertising within the college itself? no doubt the DIT forum gets decent traffic but it's still only a small number of the student population...

I'm working all this week so wont get in. I'm also only really based in Rathmines...I'm only a part time student so don't know how DIT really opperates.

(I actually wasn't trying to bump the tread!...I was just trying a fresh approach to reaching my target market better!)

How come your still the moderator here. Didn't you drop out of DIT a few years ago??!!!

About the debating, im in my final year so i wouldn't be able to committ to it. However i think its a great idea and would encourage you to promote it. The student union is by far the best way to get the word out about something like this.

I think Sean Gilsenan is the guy who deals with societies and stuff like that so give him an email with your idea.

    Good luck!

Thanks a million for that advice. I'll do that. Best of luck in the finals!...they are SO much fun!

    Well,

The Union can help, but the quickest way to get a society set up is to get fifteen people who want to join and go talk to Anita Conway in the Societies Office in the SU in Aungier Street (anita.conway@dit.ie)

I'll join. I know others who would too. Send me an email at president@ditsu.ie if you need a hand.

I think that Kevin Byrne is also trying to get a Debating Society going in DIT. Kevin is involved in the Young PDs and he also writes controversial anti-lefty articles in the student newspapers (Compact last year and DIT News this year). But despite that introduction, he's actually a decent enough guy - he's just trying to inject a bit of life into DIT.

He can be contacted through the Societies Office I think.
