PS2 starts to break down as soon as PS3 is released.

My PS2 started to screw up a bit around the time the PS3 was released and has gotten especially messed up lately. When I put a game in it takes a good while for the PS2 to read the disc and when it does finally start the game, my console starts to make quite a loud clicking noise and the game doesn't load. Is there something I can do myself to fix this or is it now RIP for my beloved PS2?

    Thanks.

How old is it? My original launch PS2 only stopped working yesterday. Long after I got a PS3.
Its probably the laser and I don't know if you could fix that yourself.

I've had it for about 5/6 years and it has started sounding terrible in the last 2/3 months but only completely broke down in the last week or so. The clicking only starts when the disc is put in so yeah it might be the laser.

it's a common issue in PS2's (and 360's have it too apparently). it's the cogs on the disc loader moving a bit over time (wear and tear etc.) and screwing up the calibration on the tray and the slider that the laser moves on.

you can fix it but it's a temp fix (few days max at most). your only long-term option is buy a new PS2 (they're cheap anyway, and i'm sure with the PS3 and christmas combination there's bucket loads out there second hand).... or just get the ps3 ;)

How do I go about fixing it? I've already broken the warranty seal on the side as I used cotton buds to get rid of dust inside.

when you open your PS2, lay it down horizontally. there's a covering where the disc tray slides in/out, screw that off. at the top part of the disc tray there's a white cog. you literally have to adjust it 1/8th of a turn at a time until the system decides to work. when it does work, it probably wont work for long...

Your ps2 can be repaired. the clicking noise is not disk loader bur the gear rack and pinion that the laser rides on. it is sticking and needs cleaning. their are a few things tou can do to get your ps2 back to a1 again. the only thing that cant be repaired is when dust gets inside the laser as it cannot be got at to clean.
