Pain in left knee

    Hi
I know I need to go to a doctor but I thought I would get an idea of what is wrong with my knee first because I could be waiting ages to be referred to a physio.

Anyway here is the story. I get a swelling in my left knee after running for a couple of km and then it becomes very painful so I have to stop. This has been happening on and off since the summer.

I am a fairly active person (I have done aerobics/kickboxing/cycling in the past religiously) but only do exercise maybe once or twice a week lately. I ran on and off for a few years and trained for the mini marathon a few years ago. This summer I did some training for a 5km run. My knee played up a few times and I had to stop during some of the training, but I completed the 5km run without any pain and any training session after that was fine. However 2 weeks ago my knee started aching again. I gave it 2 weeks break and ran again yesterday but after a few laps it hurt again. I am making an appointment with my GP this week, but does anyone know what it may be? And why only in one knee? I just realised my runners are 2 years old (but still in good condition) but I didnt think this would be a huge issue since I only started running properly recently.

Thanks and sorry if post is rambling

it could be a lot of things, minor knee trouble is usually your kneecap rubbing slightly offline and can be caused by anything from slight hamstring misalignment to your shoes being worn out. deffo change the shoes for a start.

Also I would bypass the gp and just go to a physio if it was me.

i agree u onli gonna waste both time and money goin to the gp wi an injury like this u need a physio and sooner the better because better to get it fixed wen it a minor problem rather than wait till it becomes permanent if it does so

Not much to add except to agree with the above - go straight to a physio and get yourself fitted for the correct running shoes for your biomechanics
