Hum from audio gear?

    Hey guys,
I'm having serious problems with hum/static with all of my audio gear in my bedroom. I have an old yamaha amplifier and an early sony dvd player and at the moment there's a lot of background noise or buzz, I also play guitar and both my valve amps are suffering v.badly from buzz/hum. The weird thing is, is that i moved my gear to a different room and all the buzz went, and came back when it was put back in my bedroom. I was told the carpet in my bedroom could be causing problems and i was wondering if anyone has any solutions/thoughts on the problem?, thanks,

    Alan,

Interesting problem , used to spend my work days hunting down such issues , so at a guess , its probably mains hum. Is there any mains wiring or light wiring in the floor near any of the equipment?

Its definitely an interference issue with something near the equipment , youve proved that already by moving the gear.

Also , its a possibility that the valve gear is interfering with the Hifi , that has been known to happen , when you moved the gear , did you place them in more or less the same position in the other space ? If so the valve gear is ruled out , if not , try moving them to the hum free space and place in the same position to see if the valve gear is causing the issue.

With regards to it being the carpet , that could only be a static issue , and these are transient and not persistent , ( by transient I mean static charges will not persistently cause hum , they may cause a pop every now and again but they cannot persistently cause hum), So I would rule out the carpet.

Some suggestions for what to check.

Bad/no earthing in the mains socket of the guilty room.
    or
Close proximity to fluorescent lighting or other discharge type lighting (includes novelty neon signs or plasma balls).
    or
Close proximity to a low quality light dimmer or a light dimmer used to dim lights with energy saver bulbs.
    or
Extension lead or multiplug with poor/worn/burned socket terminals.
or if you're really poxed !!
    All of the above ???

Mains bourne interference would effect all sockets/outlets in a domestic house due to a single phase being used so it would most likely be an earthing issue or air bourne stuff. This assumes that when you moved everything you took all the leads and connections with you.

My tuppence ha'penny for what it's worth !!

Thanks for tall the replies guys, it's much appreciated, i've been too busy to do any more messing around with the gear over the weekend but tomorrow should see me moving things around and checking plugs. At the moment from zen's suggestions i can't see many things that could be wrong, the only thing that might be causing it is that i have a good bit of electronic gear around the one place, so ill be looking for the offender tomorrow. (i recently changed around my rooms layout you see, i just thought of this, so obviously something is closer to my audio stuff that shouldn't be:rolleyes:) well here's hoping it's that easy.
    Thanks again,

    Alan
    I'll report back tomorrow,

okay i'm haven't got anywhere, my valve gear is hissing to high heaven and almost making it unplayable. I've tried unplugging every other piece of electronic gear from the room to rule out interference and i checked that the sockets are earthed. I really dont get it, i have two fender valve amps both of which had been fine up until about two months ago.
