I was at my local Civic Amenity Centre today getting rid of some recyclable stuff, e-waste, plastics etc.

But I had a stash of old batteries as well, and I found out that I'd have to pay for those, fair enough, but I was warned it would be expensive. When I asked for the lot to be weighed, I was quoted €25! I'd say there are about 20 or 30 batteries of various classifications (from AAA to C) involved.

Are there any cheaper ways of eco-sensitively disposing of batteries?

I've seen a lot of shops with boxes for customers to drop used batteries in (Dixons in the Jervis Centre is the only one I can think of offhand).

My local Council recycling centre takes them too.

I never heard of paying to give back batteries.

My local recycling centre takes them for free too, never heard of being charged for recycling them. On reading your post, I nervously eye up the big box of dead batteries in the corner of the room that I have yet to bring to the centre, i hope I dont get a nasty surprise.

You probably don't have to worry - the Centre I'm talking about is a privately owned facility, and they told me they're just passing on their costs.

If your local Centre is run by a local authority you probably will be able to get rid of your batteries free.

If your coming through Mullingar, the Westmeath Co.Co. Recycling depot in the Clonmore industrial estate (Zone C) takes batteries. There is a €2 charge to enter the facility.
