Right. I have 64bit CPU, and have Vista Ultimate 64 bit installed. I have 4gb RAM installed into the machine, yet only 3gb shows. This is odd, as if 64bit OS and CPU are present, should it not be detecting the full 4gb?

In your BIOS do a memory hole remap to show the full 4GB...

Does it show the 4GB in the BIOS when it does a POST

    Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605

I'm not 100% on this but I think that is for when you are using a 32bit OS. The OP is using a 64bit OS so he should not be having this problem.

If the BIOS doesnt show 4 then windows, wont show it either. So as happened in my case, i had to do the memory hole remap.

See your BIOS guide for the full thing

The bios shows total memory 3071mb (3gb)

I'll check motherboard manual on how to do the remap

Yup its defo 64 bit OS I have...

    Listed in the workaround is

An x64 (64-bit) version of Windows Vista must be used.

i guess you are using 4x1gb sticks? If that the case you have a common problem. Alot of boards 650i/680i 965/975 boards dont show the 4th gb when using 4 sticks. You can get around this with a bios upgrade.

Yes 4x 1gb sticks. That might explain it. I thought of a BIOS upgrade, which I will do. Will post results in due course

Edit- Just tried it there....didnt work unfortunately. Will give it another shot tommorow

email the maker, and ask if there is known compatibility issues with your ram and board. IF not you will have to rma the board, or get different ram. 2x2gb sticks could be a better idea.

This is a common problem with Dell Dimensions 9200 so I've been told, I have a 9200 with 4GB with the same problem, shows 4GB in BIOS and only 3070MB in System menu.
I rang Dell support to see what the problem was and they say it's Microsoft fault but not to worry cause all of the 4GB is been used and that the 1GB that doesn't show is actually been used by Vista. I said that was nonsense and that the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista limits the total available memory to 3.12GB and that there was no need for an extra 1GB as its not been used and wanted to know why I was charged for 4GB when only 3GB will work ?

Dell say I'm wrong and don't know what I'm talking about, so am I wrong or Dell

Probably the solution, I was planning upgrading the RAM to better/faster stuff at some point anyway....

If Dell are telling you Vista 32bit should be showing 4gb then they are wrong....
