Changing Dormer Roof Structure

    Hi there,

We live in a fairly new dormer bungalow (7 years). We have never been happy with the upstairs - wooden floor and partition walls are not good with little children for sound carrying and draughts.

We would love to strip the roof off and put in supports for concrete floors and block walls upstairs. Everyone says we should sell and go, but we love where we live.

Has anyone every heard of anyone doing something like this ??

Seems drastic TOTH . You could

    1. add an additional layer of plasterboard below the floor .
    2. Remove any recessed lighting points there too - they are a point of weakness for fire and sound insulation .
3 . consider a "floating" timber floor finish to the "Attic" floor uising a decent underlay
    4. The partition walls - again another layer of plaster board ( both sides ) would make a big difference
    5. The "true" attic - i.e.traingular spaces behind the upper floor outer walls - if there are no floorboards then installing some ( ply or chipboard ) will help sound and fire insulation too

There was a house beside me that did something similar (put on a concrete floor and made 2 , 2bed appartments on top) so it is possible , all you need is a good Engineer and if you have the money you'll always find someone with the time to do it. Try to source the engineer that signed off on the property as they will be farmiliar with the dwelling and what went into it.
