Hard Disk formatting issue

    I have a Sony VAIO VGN-A517M.

The issue I am having is it takes a ridiculous amount of time to transfer files (copying or moving) from the C:\ to D:\.
Transfer size's would vary from 100 MB to 16GB
USB 2.0 external hard disk is quicker!

I don't experience these issues transfering files around on my C:\

I figured it was time for a rebuild. So I reinstalled XP Pro and formatted the C:\ and D:\ drive.

This hasn't solved the issue with the D:\

Running error checking didn't find any issues.

The quick format completed but the the full format is stopped at 34%.

    Any suggestions?

Was the D:\ partition there from day one & was it originally a recovery partition?

The fact that you ran the quick format suggest that there's nothing on the D:\ drive that you want unless it has hidden stuff.

I would delete the D:\ partition altogether & create a new one. I wouldn't name it D:\ either, then format again.

The laptop originally had the D:\

I deleted the partition, created a new drive, a changed the drive letter to G:\ but still the same issue exists

I think it has bad sectors. I'm going to remove the hard drive and stick it in a 2.5" caddy, run a check disk and format to try resolve it that way.
