i play a strat at the moment and fancy a bit of a change so i am thinking of one of the above(i mainly rock and blues both lead and rhythm)so which is more versatile.(i played both in my local music shop but i never get a great feel for them in that situation(sales staff coming over and that)so i know that its personnal choice but any comments welcome.thanks.also are the gibsons that much better than the epiphones or is it just the name?

I'm interested in getting an SG special, as I think it's a good trade off between quality and price. As far as Epiphone V Gibson goes, I'd say that it's quite similar to the Squier V Fender deal, only Epiphone would be a little bit better than Squier. I suppose the bottom line is that you generally get what you pay for.

As much I'd love an SG, there's a big difference in the feel of it. I have a Strat, and any time I pick up an SG, I find my right hand is surprised by the bridge, and the general balance seems a bit funny.

iv got the sg special and a les paul standard. they are 2completely different guitars. i personally prefer the lp the feel of the neck, the feel of the frets and the sustain is hard to beat! its amazing for blues and classic rock. ever since i got it the sg hasnt gotten a look in! the sg on the other hand is slighty rough around the edges to play. there isnt as much sustain as in the lp but its still decent enough. but if you want my opinion id go out and get a good les paul! one of the high end epihones or a gibson studio.

Edwards guitars are high end epiphone prices with near Gibson quality, and they have seymour duncan pickups already installed . No need to factor upgrading into your budget.
    Surprised they weren't mentioned yet:

I currently own an Epiphone Les Paul Custom white. Also a Gibson Les Paul Standard and an Edwards Les Paul John Sykes signature.

Stay away from Epiphones if you are serious about your playing.
I haven't picked it up in a long time.....it's for the gate at this stage.
If your budget is on that level....import an Edwards from Japan.
Top quality......(i have been raving about these since i got one)....not quite a Gibson, but pretty close. I some ways better...as in Seymour Duncans, Gotoh tuners (possibly the best) and overall finish is top class.

Gibsons are now more affordable becasue of the net. Although i am also considering an SG too.

You can't really go wrong with either the Gibson Les Paul or the SG.

It would be nice to have the Fender and the Gibson too....gives you a lot of options. :):)

if you do go for the sg special though factor in the cost of changing the pickups to duncans! the difference it makes is unbelieveable! i wouldnt mind tryin out one of those edwards either!

Edwards are not Gibsons...they are Les Pauls however and are very close to the Gibsons, but the feel on the fretboard is not quite the same.

That doesn't mean they are not good. You would be very suprised by them and pleased if you made a purchase. Overall build quality is excellent and so is the finish. The parts used in them is top quality too.

I know we like to try out the guitars before we buy, but unfortunately you can't buy Edwards in the shops. The only way is maybe to buy one. You will not be disapointed.

    :):):)

hah i know there not gibsons:P theres actually a john sykes one for sale atm on adverts! iv always found les paul copies to be a little rough around the edges play wise! there is just somethin about the feel of the gibsons that i find hard to beat. say what you want about quality and price but they are amazin guitars!

Yip Duff_man...they are special. Even though a lot of people are putting the newer ones down.

I can't afford another one as a spare.....as much as i'd like to......Edwards seem to be the next best thing....and affordable.

I think the Gibson is easier to play....so that's that.

I've owned 2 SG's and didn't take to them at all...purely because they would go out tune as i rested my right arm across the body. Probably my playing technique at fault though
LP's are quite uncomfortable to play in my opinion especially if you're used to a strat.
    Consider a 335 style guitar?

I could not justify paying for another one either........criminal.

Look at all the starving people all over the world....and we want to throw thousands away an guitars.

Anyway Gibson are the dogs bollox....

I personally think Gibson depend a lot on their name. They are an excellent instrument but way over priced imo. I would do your homework and read owner reviews before you buy. I know two long time (20 years +) loyal Gibson players who will never buy another Les Paul, they are convinced that the quality is not the same as it used to be. They feel that the older LP's are way betterr. I almost bought one myself not too long ago but was very dissapointed (bought a tele instead). How about a PRS?

    My 2c.

Try as many second hand Gibson Les Pauls as you can.. there can be crazy variations in quality.. If that's what you are after..

If they are good enough for Jimi....then they are good enough for us.

I just lowered the action on my Edwards Les Paul to nearly a couple of mm from the fretboard last night.

Not one single fret is buzy....unbelievable.
If i did this to my Gibson Les Paul, i am sure there would be problems with fret buzz.

My Les Paul sets up terrifyingly low. I'd be bothered if yours didn't. And a couple of millimetres is pretty high.

Yes maybe you're right....action on the Gibson around the top of the neck is better than anything i've seen.....but that's just my opinion.

But i meant that the Edwards is excellent too for a fraction of the price.

Yeah, I'll vouch for Jimmy. Dead sound chap about trying stuff, and will talk to you about anything. Always gives you his attention and has plenty of experience with most things.

Not knowing absolutely anything about guitars, I've tried what feeling will I have having them in my hands, especially neck. I wanted to buy a Strat, but Les Paul neck felt more comfortable for me. After some experience with Spanish guitar.
Try it first, that's my opinion :-)
