Have up to 400 euro to buy a compact camera from the states.
I have been told to get a Canon or Sony.

The first place I will be using it is in the French Alps where I will be working for the winter so want it compact to not break on the slopes and for parties etc.

Dont mind spending so much if it is worth the money.

    Please please please help me.

a compact phone or camera? or do you want both?

For some of the more extreme cameras you could look at the waterproof/sandproof Pentax Optio W30. Take it diving as well ;)

Don't like Sonys personally - nothing outstanding in their line-up in my opinion.

Canon has the A570is - nice budget camera with image stabilisation and manual controls.

Panasonic's lumix range with massive 10x optical zooms in compact bodies could be worth a look.

Fuji with the f31fd is great for low light purposes (parties etc) - don't have to use flash to get a nice picture.

Cheers for pointing that out. I have just changed phone for camera. Wasn't thinking.
Cheers Thirdfox will check these out. Really appreciate it.

Could be a Freudian slip :p In which case look at the Nokia N95, Samsung G600/800 or Sony Ericsson K800i/790i/850i.

But these camera phones would be blown out of the water by the dedicated compact cams.

Someone asked me to take their picture at the weekend, with their Panasonic DMC FX33. Once I did the whole, "ooh I wouldn't know how to work that old thing", I was actually quite impressed with the camera.

It has this thing where it recognises faces & puts a little focus box on each one, so that everyone is in focus.
