Hey all, I want to get my b/f a subscription to a photography magazine for christmas but don't really know what to get. He is mostly interested in studio/wedding photography and is thinking of trying to do it professionally in the next few years...any ideas for me?

I am nearing the end of a year's sub to Practical Photography, that I got as a present last christmas. After about 10 months, it starts to repeat itself a bit, but there is usually a theme to each month e.g. Studio portraits, fine art nudes, outdoor nature photogrpahy etc. It also has the usual previews and reviews of gear.

You also get a free Lowepro camera bag and a Photoshop Elements training DVD when you subscribe for the year

Most of the monthlies start to repeat after a while, and worse the vast majority of UK magazine subscriptions are a complete rip off in Ireland - way more expensive than buying in the shop. I'm actually not kidding when I say that for a lot of them subscription rates would be cheaper if you were living in Outer Mongolia than Dublin.

As to which one, the SWPP one referenced by oshead is supposed to be good, and would suit his interests. Amateur Photographer isn't bad as an all rounder, and is one of the few exceptions to the above ripoff (available here). Professional Photographer is also quite good. I also find Black And White Photography to be very good, though deals with film a lot in case that might not be of interest

thanks for all the suggestions, really hadn't a clue where to start! :) Think I'll go with the SWPP one, seems to be the best one for what he wants to do

i read the swpp one, also, jpg magazine and professional photographer

they are all pretty good but break down like this:
    - professional photographer - shows lots of different avenues of photography without ever getting too detailed in any of them
    - jpg magazine - simply great photos, an inspiration magazine, something to make you think
    - swpp - a very industry magazine aimed at people who do wedding/studio photography full time

none of them deal too much in gear and reviews of the latest equipment which i like as once you have your equipment, no point in reading review after review of stuff you'll never buy. better to learn how to take great photos with the camera you have
