Tuner hardware: Using a Mac mini as video recorder (PVR)

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend a USB TV tuner for the Mac Mini (Intel)?

The tuning per se is not important. What I really care about is the ability to digitize true RGB via a SCART lead from my cable set top box.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Not sure about the technicalities of the RGB, but I got a Miglia TVMax+. Works really well for me, anyway, on a Mac Mini C2D.

It appears S-Video is poor compared with RGB: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-video

A different question: Does your Miglia control other devices via infrared such as a cable set top box?

IIRC there are no TV Tuner cards that support RGB input for any format for any price on any platform, that I am aware of. There are some video capture cards however, that support RGB.

S-Video is the best analog input you are going to get insofar as tuners are concerned. Of course you will need an RGB to SVideo converter. Comverter is in bold as its an electronic device that actually converts the signal, rather than just a physical plug converter.

TBH if its a digital cable signal going through a STB, the lossy compression used by the cable vendor on an SD resolution is going to be the weakest link in signal quality. I.e. S-Video is fine and the difference between RGB and S-Video in most SD TV tuner situations is negligible.

For Mac OS, elgato is also popular. IIRC it supports control of your STB via IR blasters.
