God, I hope it's better than Scarface! One of the most overrated films, just because the hip hop community entirely missed the bloody point of it.

American Gangster looks rather good however. Ridley Scott's due an Oscar

Putting this on later tonight. Will post on it after.

Well I'm glad someone else is with me on that! I've never seen a dePalma movie that I liked.

Looks like it has a lot more potential yes, but will it really bring anything new to then genre other than a story well told?

The Departed didn't. Academy didn't mind

I have seen it. I will put my very mini review in a spoiler although it will not have any spoilers.
Some people don't want to hear anything about a film before going to see it.
I was disappointed. Seems to borrow from a lot of the classic gangster films like Scarface and The Godfathers but didn't offer anything new for me. Enjoyable but I don't think it's Oscar winning stuff.
Almost everything that happens I have seen before in some form or another. Denzel and Russell are good as always but it seems that Ridley Scott just wants to add another genre to his portfolio.
Maybe I'm being harsh because I was looking forward to it but it's just what I thought. I also didn't think too much of The Departed so maybe that will make you disregard what I have to say!

Yes, its based on a true story from the late 1960s (and how the Vietnam war facilitated the influx of cheap heroin into the US, just as, strangely enough, the invasion of Afghanistan has today led to that country now producing 87% of all world-wide opium/morphine/heroin). And the comparison is not with bling-culture provoking Scarface (much less The Godfather or Goodfellas), but with Mann's Heat, or with LA Confidential (or even The French Connection), ie a cat-and-mouse narrative consisting of parallel stories of both the criminal and the cop on his trail.

While its totally predictable film-making, it is nevertheless a return to form for Scott after so much propagandistic crap [Black Hawk Down etc] over the past decade. And the Hollywood set and Academy and general movie-going audience will love it, ensuring it will garner numerous Oscar nominations ...

You're not alone. Scarface is one of the most unintentionally funny films ever made.

    All together now...

    "Push it to the Limiiiiiiiiiit
    LLLLLLiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmmmmmmiiiiiiiiiittttttt
Past the point of no return...."

One of the worst examples of 80's schlock ever.

But undoubtedly an excellent song. Sing it again monkey

Have seen the trailer. It looks like it has alot of potential but it's so hard to tell these days. Trailers for the worst films I've ever seen have made them look great. The power of marketing prevails.

You didnt like ANY De Palma movies??????

    The Untouchables.
    Carlitos Way.
    Carrie.
    Casualties of war.

    You disliked all of these?

Fair enough,he has had some stinkers(snake eyes anyone?)but he has also made some of the most prolific movies of the 20th century.

Well considering Scarface is crap, I certainly hope American Gangster isn't the new Scarface. I hope it's a whole lot better.

Your not alone in thinking Scarface isn't all it's cracked up to be. Saw it for the first time about 18 months ago and couldn't believe how ordinary it was not bad just with all the talk about it I thought it would have been way better.
I mean some people talk about it being Pacino's best performance, have they not seen both Godfathers, Serpico, Heat, even Insomnia is a better acting performance.
Wouldn't go so far as to say I didn't like it but still not as good as all the talk.

But American Gangster looks really good Denzel and Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott, thats a good lineup right there

I'd say David Cronenberg new film is the 'new' Scarface.

    Mike.

Cant freaking wait for it!! Loved A History of Violence.

It's always nice when a proper movie for "grown-ups" comes out.

There was issues over the rating or whether scenes would be cut but the irish censor said that "adults should be able to make their own decisions on what they watch and it was up to the director what scenes should be cut. Not him."

Or something to that affect...Fair play to him too!

I saw it and I'd say it's a bit like Goodfellas too.

I'm quite possibly the biggest Denzel fan ever (I've even met him once while working in Shannon Airport bar) but I was massively dissapointed with this movie. Maybe I overhyped it considering Denzel, Ridley and to a lesser extent Crowe were all attached but it was a letdown when you take into consideration the magnitude of the three people attached. Apparently Antoine Fuqua (director of Training Day) got the film originally greenlit with Denzel and Benicio Del Toro leading but budget concerns scuppered this idea. I think he would've done a much better job than Ridley because this isn't Ridleys usual movie.

I posted this on another forum...
Just finished watching it and I'm kind of dissapointed. It was good but nothing compared to what the 3 big names attached to it should've produced. Its very slow to start and they don't explain some of the plot well at all which confuses you plenty of times throughout. The story was badly paced and a bit of a jumble at times with no cohesion.

The ending however was pretty good but wasn't good enough to redeem the rest of the movie. Crowe and Denzel only lit up the screen once at the end for about 4 minutes of great acting the rest was meh. It doesn't deserve the 9.0 it has on IMDB but then again its early days. Its a high 6 or a low 7. I was expecting much more.

well i had to give in and watch this movie.. and what a let down too slow
and a host of other things i could say.
    my dreams are shattered.
    lol.

i thought it was crap, Denzel Washington seems to have played his training day character ever since that film.........................its tiresome. I wasnt expecting much when i saw the trailer and the 70s music they had for it. Just seems like a bad period/era to set a film. Nothing happens in the film.

Eastern Promises looks like it'll be way better

Cant believe so many people didnt like scarface. I loved that film. Maybe its not a classic though. Cant wait for this film though. I saw Eastern Promises too and liked it although it wont be for everyone.
