Nut broke!

ever hear of this happening before? went to bend the high e, the thing snapped in two between the e and b string and the top half just slid out of place til it was nice and comfortable to the annoyance of my fingers trying to fret it! hmmm could this be a divine message telling me it's long gone past the time to upgrade my wee Peavey or just bad luck?

anywho, as far as replacing it goes, would you? or could this be a sign of something more sinister with the guitar, like the early days of neck warping or that? nothing else seems wrong anyway, just never heard of this happening before so thought i'd ask.

it's normal, a nut sometimes breaks if there's a weak spot. it's certainly nothing wrong with your guitar.

if it's a fender or gibson style nut i can cut you a new one, i have some bone blanks somewhere, and a set of files.

it's actually quite easy if you're tempted to try it yourself.

cool, might try it myself if it's so easy, either that or I was thinking about putting one the them graphite ones in it. would bone be better than graphite? already have graphite saddles... it's a peavey raptor, kind of a dumbed down wolfgang, so i'm not sure if a generic strat one would fit. i'll have to do a bit of research on it.

yeah it makes sense how it would break but still i've never heard of it happening at all before, in all my wasted days browsing the net and all... must have been browsing the wrong sites...

aye i'm pretty sure that'll be a regular strat style nut
just depends on the neck radius

you'll need nut files, which are expensive if you're an idiot

if you aren't an idiot, you'll just buy a set of automotive feeler gauges (used for measuring spark plug distances in a car engine) and notch the edges of them so that you can use them as files. that, a little clamp and a set of needle files and you'll easily be able to cut all the nuts you want.

bone is said to be best for tone.
i'm calling bull**** and that it doesn't matter. bone is the only one i've carved myself though.
