Just wondering if I can get rid of a any of these Java programs. At the moment on my computer there's :
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Java (TM) 6 Update 2
    Java (TM) 6 Update 3

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11

Anyone care to tell me if I can delete any of these?

    Thanks

Yep use Add/Remove Programs to remove all but the 6 Update 3 one.

Yep those are safe to remove. Its a good idea to remove old java versions as they are a security vulnerability that a lot of malware will use to infect your PC.

    So out of all them:
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Java (TM) 6 Update 2
    Java (TM) 6 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11

All I need not delete is Java (TM) 6 Update 3.

Thats a free space gb's now, thanks for the advice gents.

is it not possible that the previous updates are prerequisites to the newer updates, hence leaving java and j2se with possible issues?

No each update is a standalone application.

Yep, they're installed into seperate directories. The reason for this is to allow developers to run their apps against different versions to check compatibility and the like. But your average user only needs one instance.

While I would agree with irlrobins, Java themselves do recommend leaving them there if space is not an issue.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it eitherway.

I have found issues with older versions of java many times. I work as a <snip> and some of the programs in certain builds will only work with certain versions of java.

I have always found removing older versions of java works best in all enviroments.

I've had people say to me that they need the older version of java for work related stuff which has been strange. Generally people don't need them, and they are a security vulnerability, so should be removed. Not a big deal anyway
