Well folks, meself and her(good)self heading to the west coast on fri evening for a week, plan is 2 nights to start in san fran, then work our way down the coast and flying home out of LA dodging fires along the way no doubt...
Was thinking of San diego and maybe Tijuana?
I'm sure loads of you have taken this route before, has anyone any reccomendations on places to visit or stop off? Only booked into SF for first 2 nights, have nowhere booked for the rest leaving options fairly open...
Hearing bad reports of police scams and shakedowns in mexico, anyone been?

Feel free to pimp my roadtrip!
    cheers all!
    D

Your in California for a week and intend on doing LA and San Fran / San Diago driving lol..
Do you have any idea how big California is ?
Do 3 days in San Fran and 2 in LA..that's all you'll have time for.

quick stitch, unless you have a private lear jet you haven't a hope of doing it in a week.. yes, do SF and LA. You'd want 3 weeks to do what you're planning. Is her goodself aware of your ambitions?:D

Don't worry, I'm not planning an in depth exploration of the place!
Main things that I shouldn't miss... a few sights and photo ops is all! 8hrs drive from SF to SD straight, breaking up driving over a few days, I'm told to spend as little time as possible in LA, haven't heard anything good about it, but I reckon it has to be seen anyways...

    another way of putting it...
IF you only had 7 days to drive from san fran to LA.... what would you take in?

It took me 15 days to do Cali and at that I was driving 6-8 hours a day , I thinks its 30 times the size of Ireland. I actually loved L.A especially at this time of year.

Jeez I travelled around CA in June for three weeks. We did a few quite long drives - I can't imagine how you can get from SF to SD in 8 hours by car - that sounds crazy to me.

Do you have to go as far down as SD? Why not concentrate on what's between San Fran and LA? Big Sur is a beautiful coastal stretch and there are some fab towns between San Fran and LA - Monterey, Carmel, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara are all worth a visit. The scenery around Big Sur is beautiful.. You won't have time to visit Yosemite which is unfortunate because it's really beautiful and was the highlight of my trip. You can do trips to it from San Fran but you'd probably be squeezing in too much.

I would advise not to go as far as San Diego though - you'd waste too much of your time driving. Spend three nights between San Fran and LA in some of those towns I mentioned and spend two nights when you get to LA. It's a real whirlwind of a trip but not much else you can do in a week.. Also I'd recommend staying in Santa Monica in LA - it's a lovely beachside spot with a great nightlife and you can visit the LA sights during the day if you have a car..
