Self Defence classes

    Hi.

Can anyone tell me if there's a self-defence class available in the city? I've googled 'til I just can't google no more and can only find specific martial arts classes. All I want is to be able to (hopefully) fend off an attacker, not become a black-belt in Aikido or somesuch.

    So, anything going?

Hi - there are Kick Boxing classes in Penrose Wharf Centre - Miko Kickboxing Academy. There are mixed classes and also ladies only classes. You can email for more info at miko_kickboxing@mail.com. Or you can call the Instructor - Paul on 086 2636 472. J

Thanks for that Jude. It's not quite what I'm looking for as I just need general self-defence tactics rather than a specialised martial art. I'll bear it in mind if I can't find any self-defence classes at all though.

To be honest, I'd just carry a pepper spray if it wasn't (quite ridiculously) illegal to defend yourself in Ireland by temporarily incapacitating your attacker

Hairspray can work just as well....

I was wondering about that. A really cheap one would probably be the nastiest in terms of stinging. I thought about that spray oven cleaner too but I'm not sure how far it'd squirt. Perhaps I'll have a shufty around Supervalu tomorrow and see what 'harmless' product would be best suited to the alternative job of an offensive weapon. I can just see me clutching a can of Cilit Bang and telling it "Congratulations - you've been promoted".

Still... a good self-defence class would be helpful.

Check out a martial art called Krav Maga. There used to be classes in the Olympic Karate club on Shandon Street a year or two ago.

It's a really effective form of self-defence and has the benefit of providing good exercise as well.

Thanks dudara. I've seen classes for that in Dublin but couldn't find anything in Cork. But if you say they had some a while back then perhaps I should get in touch with the Dublin place and see if they can help.

Check the Evening Echo - Krav Maga classes are advertised pretty much every day.

    Hi,

I am also a woman and wanted to learn self-defence so I started doing Kapap, it's on in the Little Island Community Centre Fridays at 18:30 for 2 hours. It's excellent, you don't have to be super fit to join, It teaches you how to get out of hairy situations with ease. Sometimes Dave does female only courses (lasting 1 weekend). You can find out more at www.kapap.ie

    I highly recommend it.

That is horrible all_smilz. What did you do when you met your attacker? I will ring that number at some stage today and find out where it is being held.

I did Judo as a child and loved it and will always remembers the moves/throws - but - I couldn't do it now as I have had back surgery and with Judo there is a lot of throwing/sweeping etc. that does require both skill, strength and close body contact. Where as with the likes of Karate/Kickboxing - you kick/punch from a slight distance as opposed to the direct body contact of holding somebody to throw/sweep etc. Hope I'm making sense. And yes - everybody should do Self-Defence classes - especially women!!! J

Self-Defense classes are a must for women. I would love to do kick boxing but don't really know where to start looking. The only class I found was on a Thursday Night which I cant do because of an evening course. If anybody knows of any kick boxing classes going on please let me know.

    hey,
The classes will be held in blackpool, near the cinema.there will be some judo involved which is very easy to learn for all ages and abilities and there will also be techniques and ideas from other martial arts. the techniques are only one part of the cousre though because we want people to come away with knowledge to be able to avoid and get out of sticky situations with confidence and assertiveness and use the actual physical techniques as a last resort. but most of all the course will be fun and will be taught by a woman with alot of experience and she has proved that all these techniques work on guys in our adults judo class. if you want to book a place or just get more details ring Sarah on 087 9912058 or Anthony on 087 7771831. it costs e55 for 8 classes and will be starting monday 21st jan at half eight.

    Hope to see you there.
    Anthony

Many thanks Judes, will def look into the kick boxing. I have been wanting to do it for a while now.

Thanks for the info corkjudo. Will def be there on Monday. It seems like a really good class and as a newbie to Cork I really should be getting out there and being a bit more active whilst also learning how to defend myself!!

I advise that you look into getting Krav Maga classes. It is the Israeli Self Defence system, I am not sure if there are classes in Cork but if you can find them they are probably the best as it teaches as if it is real life.

It teaches to hit fast and hard and run. or in other circumstances to kill if necessary (but I assume thats not what you are looking for.)

Beans - you'll be the most assertive woman walking the streets of Cork and as a newbie to our fair city - which is much fairer than Dublin - WELCOME!!! Now go learn how to "kickass"! J

For anyone interested MIKO Academy in Penrose Wharf will probably be featured on "Operation Transformation" this evening, 20.30, RTE 1, as the Cork girl in this programme has just started training at MIKO, so it will probably feature one of the Ladies classes. J
