Any news on a new console?

Before i even begin, i love my Wii.

Now, seeing as the other two consoles are dropping in price and a new XBox "family edition" is being released, has anyone heard any rumblings of a new console?

I ask because as the other two become more accessible I fear that the Wii may get left behind. I would love to see Ninty moving quickly to capture the momentum that they have, over the other two major players.

Why would they release a new console? Its already cheaper than both XBOX or PS3. It doesn't have all the power they have but thats not the idea with the Wii, so I dont think think they'll ever release a new Wii except for maybe a slimline one in a few years.

There's no chance of a new console for quite some time. The Wii is still out selling the 360 and PS3 despite there price drops. Nintendo should drop the price however it would really seal them as the outright winners in this gen since I believe this christmas seaon will determine the placing of the consoles in terms of sales.

I've thought for a while that they might drop the price of the Wii before Christmas, but the more I think about it the more I think they just don't need to, as sales will be just as strong anyway. I mean they still seem to have a demand that outstrips supply. If anything they might introduce some form of bundle deal. It seems to be the more popular option initially, followed later by the price drop.

Although it is coming up to about the year mark so it wouldn't be at all unprecedented to drop the price. Just look at the ps3, one year on and numerous SKU's, bundles and price reductions. I still reckon the bundel is a bit more likely though

I did not mean release, I ment development.
They are indeed outselling the PS3 and Xbox but with the new prices I can see a resurgent PS3 this Xmas.

The Wii will not have as long a life span as the PS3 and I thinking more along the lines of 2-3 years time

Sorry to spoil your party guys but the PS3 is selling nearly as well the Wii in europe due to the price drop.

There's always a huge boost in sales after a price drop. It will probably level out on the run up to christmas. The Wii is still pulling well ahead of the other two competitors and nintendo know that even if the price dropped they will still sell better this christmas than the other two consoles.

Just because the Wii hasn't got the hardware to best the PS3 and 360 doesn't meant that it will only last 2-3 years. It will last until the next generation comes along and not before it. Nintendo have been consistently been out selling rivals with better technology for years. The GB, GBC GBA and DS have lasted years despite being outdated technology when they were released. Nintendo are basically just taking the same approach with the Wii since when they used better hardware with the N64 and GC they got beaten.

It's a positive bit of news, particularly after Microsoft stole the show in September.

The real question is whether Sony's gaming division can continue to make losses at its current rate ($846M this quarter) despite strong sales in PS2 and PSP areas. I'd hate to see Sony pull out of the gaming market (or specifically the PS3 market), leaving just the XBox and Wii in its wake.

We're all benefiting from the three horse race, through better console pricing and superior product offerings. Though there are no plans to drop Wii prices, I'd imagine if competition hots up we'll see more innovative product offerings and features, in order to compete with the two behemoth consoles.

Isn't it quite likely that a lot of those sales are of the (now limited edition) 60GB bundle, by people who don't want to get lumbered with its replacement, the massively insulting 40GB cripple-o-pack? I expect there'll be another sales slump once they're all gone.

I'm sure Nintendo have a development team looking towards the creation of new hardware - all the three players would.

That doesn't mean a machine will be out any time soon, just that the development of a whole new platform can take time and isn't something that can be done successfully in a year or two. The pattern would be that a small team work on prototypes, ideas and concepts for a while, figures out which one is the best and then they look towards making the theory a reality, and a remotely affordable one if possible.

(I'm certain I heard both MS and Ninty saying that they were working on their respective next gen machines straight after the release of their last gen ones)
