Desktop power problem - only powers up when cold?

Strange problem - my desktop stopped powering up normally last week. I had not added any hardware or moved anything, but the first time I had the problem, the PC would not start when I pressed the start button on the front of the case. The lights flashed for less than a second and the power disappeared. I kept pressing, getting the same result, until at last it started up. I got a blue screen during the start up, saying it had detected new hardware and that there was a problem. What new hardware?! I restarted and all was fine.

Since then, when I shut down and try to start up soon after, the lights start up but power cuts after less than a second the first time I try, then nothing when I hit the button again. If I leave the PC for a while it starts up first try no problem (not sure how long - certainly when I shut it down at 1am it starts up fine at 10am). While running there are no problems.

I opened it up last week when the symptoms first started to appear and disconnected various components (the graphics card is power hungry) but no change. The power supply is an Antec 400w model and is thought to be a pretty good one. I also know the motherboard or power switch could be at fault, but don't have the skills to look into it.

Any ideas? What else can I do to diagnose the problem?

maybe make sure none of ur power leads have faulty connections (using process of elimination) especially to ur graphics card, make sure the power cable is makin proper contact, and with ur hard drives aswell

make sure no fans are blocked...like the one on ur graphics card if there is one..

    tough one....:(

Sounds like your psu is dead. Have you a spare to check?

No, but how comes it powers up from cold and runs alright then? I left it running for 3 days over the weekend, no problems at all. TBH I would rather it be the PSU than the motherboard (no way I'm going to be able to tell if it's this, will have to leave it into PC repair place), easier to replace the PSU!

Anti is right its the PSU had an Antec PSU from a mates rig that I was fixing that behaved the same way and then it eventually died
