Re:Instant Film Manipulations

It crossed my mind that not everybody will know what instant film manipulation is; it's actually the process of working on the newly-emerged instant print (such as SX70 film produced by Polaroid) with hands or an instrument, stick, pen, etc. to create an image using the instant pic merely as a guide. For this to be possible, the emulsion must remain wet for some time; most integral instant film such as Polaroid 600 or Fujifilm Instax dry almost immediately so the process is not possible. When Polaroid withdrew their manipulable film, a great number of artists using this medium, most of them abroad, were deprived of this means of expression. The purpose of the petition is to persuade Fujifilm to consider making such a film.
I don't know if any of you got to the exhibition hosted by the Meath Arts Group/Diamond Cinema in Navan, where Suella, a noted local artist, had an exhibition of her manipulated instant prints. They are well worth seeing!

There's already one thread on this, and there's no need for two. As Cabaal said, online petitions are really worth the paper they're printed on, no company, or individual really gives a damn about them. I've yet to see one actually accomplish anything.

Could you direct me to the thread, please, ned?
Also, re. the petition, we don't know till we try :)

This thread, here, in the Photography Forum, which you already started, and replied to not 5 minutes before starting a new thread :

Online petitions still aren't worth a damn.

Rofl, God loves a tryer. Someone stick a post-it on this thread that says either "bin me" or "lock me" :D

Well, I obviously knew about my own post. I'm disappointed, I thought someone else was posting about instant photography here too.
I may be in a minority, but I don't suppose that's a reason to bin or lock my posts.

You started both threads, how could you think someone else was posting?

No, it's not because we disagree with you. We're all photography enthusiasts too, and lament the loss of any format. We disagree with you starting multiple threads on the one subject. As rymus said, this one needs to be locked now.

I admire your optimism, maireadmarie, but I can't say that I share it.
Fuji is a global corporation, which answers to its shareholders.
It's naive to think that they will respond to an online petition, from a minority, who share an uncommon interest.

Are there any smaller film companies, who could produce what you're looking for & distribute it solely via the internet? It seems to me that this is something more suited to a cottage industry than a corporate giant.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭maireadmarie

    City-Exile,
Thanks for the courteous reply, and it's not a bad suggestion re. this being a possible cottage industry more than something for a big corporation. We'll fight on anyway. I don't suppose you're the money and time to invest yourself? Serious question, I assure you.
Ned, I made two posts, one about the petition, and, upon reflection, another to explain what the actual process is about, because there are probably some people in Ireland who've never heard of it.
Since you are obviously the moderator, feel free to deal with my posts as you wish -

Right, I think this does only need one thread, but as this seems to be the busier I'll lock the other one...

As regards instant photography... I do like it, but it's so bloody expensive :(

I have 2 Polaroids, but both take 600 film, which I have no interest in - I have some other rarer films, but nothing to shoot them with.

And since I'm locking the other thread, the petition for the instant film is here.

Edit: And for the regulars, if you have a problem with a thread, is there any chance you could click the Report Post ( report.gif ) button, it makes life a lot easier for me to find anything you think is wrong, and to keep a record of anything you think is wrong. :)

Neither the money, nor the time, I'm afraid.
Being an IT person, masquerading as a sports photographer, I barely have time for much else. For the same reasons, I don't have money for anything else either.

    Ok, City-Exile :( I understand.

Thanks very much, Fajitas, for the help.

Curiosity forces me to ask, what are the rarer films you need cameras for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

I can't remember the numbers, they're all back down in Waterford, back of the fridge...

All I can remember is the polaroid back for the Holga will take all of them, they're all expired, and there's 2 B&W's and 2 colours... The colour ones are defo transferable, and the B&W is transferable with a bit of force...

Sounds like it might be Polaroid 667, 669 etc.. Or Fujifilm FP100C or B -
The latter can be bought quite cheaply in Britain.
Does the Holga Polaroid back fit other medium-format cameras?
You can get, as you no doubt know, cameras for that film, such as EE66, 100 automatic etc. for almost nothing on E-Bay. Though the Polaroid 180 or 195 fully manual cameras would be better. But not cheaper.
Have you tried the SX-70 cameras with the 600 film?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    Yep, they're the ones alright!

    Link and Link

    That's the polaroid back.

It probably could be modified for other to fit other MF's.

The 600 SE mentioned on the first link, that'd take your film too. I saw one advertised in one of those shop ads. in Amateur Photography a few weeks ago, with a lens. The Minolta Instant Press, another beauty, I believe, for someone with deep pockets.
I know the film is relatively dear, when you can find it. But you can't beat taking the picture and having it right there a minute or so later. And it's unique!

    5D's buffer is faster :p

You still have to print it, though.

See, we've been having a nice conversation about instant photography. :)

I'll take them off your hands if you don't want them :)

Actually, when I had quite a bit of 600 film during the summer, I used always leave a few frames hidden around houses there'd been a party in.

The manipulations and transfers were one of the main attractions for me with instant photography, but I never got around to trying any... Found a few digital alternatives anyways...

Heh, gonna hang onto them for the moment Jaqian, I might have some need for them... maybe...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭maireadmarie

So you'd be happy enough with a new Fujifilm manipulable film, Fajitas. Miracles can happen :)

Hi Mairead, is that exhibition still on in Navan?

    Peter

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭maireadmarie

Peter, I believe it was just Thursday, but I'll find out for you, maybe there'll be another one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭maireadmarie

Peter, I found out that the exhibition is on until the 8th November 2007. It's in the Diamond Cinema, Navan. There's a website, www.diamondnavan.com.

Thanks, I must try to get in to see it soon.
