Remembering Ligeti is a unique and exciting event celebrating the music and life of one of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries - György Ligeti. The festival, which takes place in Liberty Hall and the National Concert Hall, features a host of internationally renowned artists and groups from Ireland and abroad. The festival will also present eight major academic papers on Ligeti’s music given by leading experts on the Hungarian composer. Three extraordinary films by Stanley Kubrick which feature the music of Ligeti will also be shown during the festival.

    The festival runs from November 9th - 11th 2007.

As it happens I'll be in Dublin that weekend... anyone got any opinions on whether any of these concerts would be worth seeing? Not particularly familiar with Ligeti's work but looks like it might be fun, especially the Kubrick stuff...

Ooh, interesting. I'm not really familiar with Ligeti's work either but there's a few things that sound interesting. Not much of a Kubrick fan so I'll probably avoid the screenings.

I'll be there for a good bit of the events, I have to do a report for college (UCD School of Music is sponsoring it, and two of my lecturers are presenting papers).

    Plus Ligeti rawx

Despite that, I'd recommend Ciarán Crilly's talk: The ‘Perfect Collaborator’: 'Ligeti and the Films of Stanley Kubrick'
Caught the preview in class, and while not a Kubrick fan either, found it really interesting

    Recital I
    Ian Pace (piano)

    Programme
György Ligeti: 'Études for Piano' (complete)
    FRI 9TH NOV 7.30 - 8.30pm €10

This is an excellent introduction/taster if you are at all in two minds about this festival.

Rolf Hind performed this at last years Living Music festival, and gave an excellent commentary on each étude, looks like Ian Pace will take these straight by the timing. They are truly remarkable pieces and well worth one hour's time invested to see if you like what you hear.

Did anyone go to these, then? How was it? I only found out about it too late. I saw the Arditti Quarted years ago playing some Ligeti among others, and it totally blew me away.

Arditti Quartet were indeed mind-blowing; played String Quartet 1 & 2. The second string quartet is an incredible piece of music. Other highlights for me were the scoring of Musica Ricerceta for accordian - i grabbed the Barrel Organ version of this afterwards, but I doubt there is a recording of this for accordian and it fully deserves one.

Excellent event and I hope they try and repeat this with another 20th Century composer soon. Thank you UCD and Arts Council.
