Will it work on a networked drive or does it have to be connected via usb/firewire??

Just wondering as i was planning on having a central drive on the network for backing up the iMac, Mac mini(running MCE n OSX), PC n Laptop...

    Yes and no.
Can backup to a network share (AFP)
    Pick a disk. Any disk.

You can designate just about any HFS+ formatted FireWire or USB drive connected to a Mac as a Time Machine backup drive. Time Machine can also back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing, Leopard Server, or Xsan storage devices.

A possible workaround if you have an AEBS

Backing up over a network would be bloody handy with Time Machine, I have no spare HD's to test Time Machine at the moment, damn shame :(

What i want to know is...how big should your HD be? And how useful will it be with a Laptop?

I have MBP with 160gig HD. I have a WD 500 Gig external HD which i use for backing up and storing media (movies) off my machine and a rugged portable lacie drive (160 Gig) which i use for video edits while i'm out and about as it doesn't need its own power supply and is relatively small.

So how will time machine cope with not having external drive in place all the time? and how much HD space will it require? Does it only back up DATA or is it System files as well.

I currently have a 160Gig partition on the WD drive whcih i use to make a full bootable backup of my system on a bi weekly basis.
