Getting to Tallaght

Will be training in Tallaght for the next 2 weeks, Greenhills Industrial Estate to be exact....what would be the best way to get out there from where I am in Maynooth/Leixlip? I've only ever really driven to work in Naas, wouldn't be a big driver so any help would be appreciated thanks. AA Roadwatch route planner only ever seems to confuse me even more than usual. Thanks.

The straight forward route is up the Lucan road to the M50 southbound and come off at the Tallaght Exit, but that will be a nightmare traffic wise. You could come off at Lucan and onto the new Grange Castle road through Clondalkin into Citywest and down through Tallaght.

Thanks masterK....yeah I don't really think it's the distance judging by maps, seems to be traffic that will be the killer. No way of avoiding that I suppose...any back roads or anything? Gotta love the back roads!

I think the Greenhills Industrial Estate is more in Walkinstown rather than Tallaght. It's not too far from the Walkinstown Roundabout.

It is indeed, MiniD, quite a trip from Tallaght.

OP, I'd suggest you come off the M 50 at Red Cow and into Ballymount estate just after the Red Cow then into Ballymount. Take the first exit at the roundabout, then third exist. This will take you to Walkinstown Roundabout and hit the Greenhills Road that way; you will probably hit traffic this route but it's fairly simple.

An alternative is to take the right at Woodys in Lucan and onto the Grange Road, then head down Nangor Road onto the Long Mile Road. Walkinstown Avenue is the right at the Nissan garage, take this and it will lead you to Walkinstown Roundabout or you can continue to the end of the Long Mile Road and take this right, much of a muchness as to which one will flow better.

When your there, pop into the Caffreys Chocolate Factory; they are in that estate as well. It's a treat!! :D

Everybody should drive round the walkinstown roundabout in the morning for that 'Calcutta' feeling.

I go to Greenhills every morning, found the quickest way there is Leixlip->Barnhall->Hazelhatch->Newcastle->N7->Belgard Road->Airton Road and the quickest way back (as that gets mental with the left turn at Newlands in the evenings) is Airton Road->Belgard Road->Fonthill Road->Grange Castle/Adamstown->N4 back.

To get in for 9 I need to leave by 7:45 but it usually takes 50 minutes back. There is likely a quicker way in, but the way back isn't it...

I, however, am going to the other end of Greenhills entirely. Theres also roadworks on the Airton Road for the next while.

I live in Maynooth and may have a job in Tallaght soon (fingers and toes crossed), I have been considering getting a car but if it takes you 1hr 15 mins to get in for 9am I would be as quick getting the train and then hopping on the red line LUAS. Plus I could doze and listen to a few tunes without worrying about running anyone over.

Although the fun part with trains is that if I am 2 mins late leaving my house I could be up to an hour late waiting on another train. If you leave your house 2 mins late you are 2 mins late for work.

You wouldn't be anywhere near as quick on the train/Luas - it takes 1hr30 minutes to Belgard Luas stop from Maynooth if you take the 7am train. Any later train - you aren't going to make it for 9am. Been there, done that.

You also can't snooze on the Luas without getting incredible back problems ;) Better to have 45 minutes more sleep in bed in Maynooth.

The place I have the interview for is nearer the Tallaght Luas stop- a 5 or 10 min walk away. So I wouldn't get in for 9 if I got the 7am train and then the Luas? I went in today to find where my interview is, train to Connolly was 40 mins, then 50 mins on the Luas to Tallaght. Today was Sunday though- is the Luas slower during rush hour? (I had never been on the Luas before today).

Luas is slightly slower in rush hour due to:

    1: More people boarding/disembarking
2: More traffic to interact with
3: Can often get blocked for 1/2/3/up to 5 at my worst experience light changes at the Red Cow due to ignorant ****er drivers blocking the tram line on the southbound ramp.
4: Arguably the trams are slower due to the weight they're hauling (300 people or so vs. 20 on a weekend) but I doubt this has much effect.

The Maynooth line train in also slower in rush hour for reason 1, but not much.

Effectively, you will *have* to take the 7:00 ex Maynooth to make it to Tallaght for 9 (just about). If you've got a car, drive. You get to leave later and have less chance of being knocked off by any event - such as coming down the ramp at Connolly to the sight of a Luas pulling out, at 7:45 its anywhere from a 5 to 15 minute wait for the next tram.

I've also found that, not accounting for the cost of the car - I said if you've already got one, right ;) - taking the car is cheaper than train+luas fares.

FWIW I regularly drive from Athlone to Tallaght (belgard Rd).

I have found that if I get to the newcastle rd lights before 06:45 the journey can take 15 - 20 minutes - arrive at the lights ten minutes later and the same journey can take 40 - 50 miinutes.

I have two choices either arrive 50 minutes early and have a McD's breakfast, or spend the best part of an hour crawling in. I choose to come early!

Going in the opposite direction I leave after 8PM and it take 15 - 20 minutes.

Just wondering how long does this take if I have to be in work for 9?

I regularly do it in 75 minutes from Kingsbry to Airton Road at that time.

You'll still have just about 2 hours of commuting a day when you've got the car, but the thing is - 3 hours now is a bit of a short estimate ;)

7:00 train from Maynooth is *essential* to get there for 9 = nearly 2 hours

If I left Airton at half 5, got to Belgard Luas (where you might get a seat), caught the Luas there and then I'd get to Connolly for the 18:37 home (standing room only till Clonsilla) - home at 7:20.

Thats just under 4 hours. Get the car, you won't regret it.

What about getting the 66 or 67 to Heuston and getting the LUAS from there?

There is some Xpress services on both routes (It's on the bus lane from Lucan to Heuston) as well as the regular services and it's cutting off the slower part of both the bus trip and LUAS journeys.

its a good idea but buses aren't always reliable :(

When the kids are off school you can get the 0728 Cluan Aobhinn 66X (the one that goes the wrong way out of the town and on to the motorway) and get off at Heuston; when the brats are in this gets a bit tight time wise - if you absolutely cannot be late its no use.

The 67X doesn't serve Maynooth in the mornings, only the evenings. The regular services won't have you there in time.

What about a bit of lateral thinking here?

Get the 0743 from Hazelhatch, arrive at Heuston at 0810 - guaranteed to be at Belgard well before 0900. Simple really. :)

No guarantee of parking at Hazelhatch at that time :p

Getting there without a car from Maynooth is effectively impossible to - brings us back to the car issue... you'll still be leaving Maynooth earlier for any form of public transport than driving.

I got the car, this morning and yesterday were the first 2 mornings I drove in when there was normal traffic. Yesterday I left my house at 7.35 and got in at 8.25, this morning I left at 7.45 and got in at 8.35. I have to be in for 9, I think I'll try leaving at 8 in the morning, hopefully a load of traffic won't have built up in the meantime from the time I usually leave at!

I get home in 45 minutes, half of what it would take on the train and Luas!!!
