Hi all i just got a new machine with vista ultimate.
For a few years now ive been using firefox as i heard it was safer than internet explorer in terms of viruses?
The thing is i really like the look and feel of internet explorer that comes with vista.
Just how good is it these days?
Does it use any more resources than firefox?
How safe is it? baring in mind im running avg antivieus and antispyware.

Firefox is prettybad for using up CP resources. But internet explorer is like a dressed up piece of crap. Looks nice but still it is what it is.

I recommend you try Opera web browser or get an Internet Explorer skin for Firefox.

I tried out IE7 with my new Vista install back in march for a while , I liked the look of it too , however it filled my PC up with so much adware and rubbish off the net that I switched back to firefox ,
Maybe its not as pretty , but its a hell of a lot better than internet explorer.

I do like the look of the new IE... However, i'd be lost without the various add ons in Firefox, so i'm sticking with that for now...

Also I've never noticed much lag while using it, so it can't take that much of the resources, can it?

I use both IE7 and Firefox. Just downloaded Opera today and am giving it a go. I like the feel to it. Maybe its just me but it seems to take a little longer to open pages that the IE and FF.

Jury is out for the moment with me.

I've noticed that mem usage by opera is more than that of firefox and IE combined...

Ive been using both firefox and IE 7 and firefox wins hands down its much quicker the password manager is better the tabs facility is excellent albeit it is available on ie 7. I much prefer firefox simply because it is so much smoother than ie 7

    Firefox + AdblockPlus = no IE/Opera/Anything.

I can't remember the last time I've seen an advertisement online, apart from some text only ads that aren't in a seperate frame. Maybe the odd one, but then it's a simple "right click > block" and it's vapourised.

On my XP computers I have used Firefox for the last 2 years or so....

Put Vista on this new machine. IE7 ran pretty smoothly etc so I was tempted to stay with it.....

Installed Firefox in the end :D

IE7. Can't remember the last time it couldn't display a page. I use a firewall, sensible security settings etc, my PC doesn't "fill up with adware and rubbish off the net".

Fanboys are so full of it.

No it's not primiarly a web brower. It's a common GUI for lots of microsoft backengines / systems. It also works as a browser. Many commercial packages use IE as the display engine, Backup Exec , Computer Associates, WSUS , Dell's suite of management apps , windows update on Vista, display of HTML formatted mails in Outlook / Outlook express, the list goes on and on. These are not WEB apps because they won't run in anything other than IE / Trident rendering engine.

So if you use windows you can't remove IE and have to put up with the security holes, you can however, change the proxy settings so IE can't connect to the internet.

Of the popular browsers Opera is the safest.
FireFox is the most tweakable and if you use NoScripts in addition to adblock you can block a lot of junk. Remove this permenantly is great for reclaiming space on the screen.
As a Browser, IE is very much "Me too" as features are borrowed

couldn't agree more. completely essential addon. Using the internet anywhere other than home is a much slower and uncomfortable experience now that i'm so used to not seeing those horrible ads embedded into the middle of forum topics and generally all over web pages

Adblock + NoScript + FF = The Win.

I'd also recommend greasemonkey. It allows you to rewrite pages to suit you. For example.

Oh and firebug (if you like developing web stuff).

Not to mention the FF boards.ie extension. :)
