Repaying course fee to employer

    Hi,

I'm leaving my current job within 6 months of finishing a course. They are now seeking 75% repayment of the fees.
I signed a document agreeing to these terms but I have since heard that repayment of fees to an employer is illegal/unenforceable.

Does anyone know about this or where I could find more info?

I thought it was standard practice. They fund you to go to college and train you so you agree to stay with them and if you leave within a certain time you refund a percentage of the course fees.

There is no such thing as a free meal, you knew the deal when you got into it and now you want to find a way out of paying the fees back as agreed.

I signed a document agreeing to these terms

i think that gives them the right to do it..you hardly expect them to train you up for other companies?

I've encountered this before and there's nothing unusual about it.

I don't know the legality of it, but given that you signed an agreement, I wouldn't think the court would be on your side.

they will stop it from your remaining pay.
if that doesnt cover it im not sure what procedure they would follow

You agreed to the payment , pay what they ask, thank them and be on your way.

It is as important how you leave a company as how you join it.

    Thanks for the feedback.
It looks like I'll be paying so.

If it's alot, try signing something that allows you to pay a 100 or so a month, rather than a bulk sum.

    Sounds about right OP.
Any policies I've ever seen make you repay the course if you leave within two years.

So if you're leaving after 6 months, then 75% sounds about right.
Be thankful they are not looking for 100% back
