hey ive run into an issue that im guessing a lot of people have run into

ive moved into a house where the wireless network is already setup, so the cd is not available

i can see the network, and when i try to connect i need to enter the key, on the wireless box is a 8 letter code, a WPA code but when i enter it, windows is telling me i should be entering a 10 digital hex WEP code.....

how do i get around this

Whoever had the wireless router before you has changed the key from WPA to WEP, to get around this you either have to ring up eircom or who ever the broadband is with or ask the person who had it before hand.

Technically, WEP keys don't provide sufficient security and are easily obtained.

However, your only after moving into a house and theres wireless already there??? Surely its not yours or someone else's account, if so your better off buying your own broadband.

Log on to the wireless router and get the key from there.

192.168.1.1 in ur browser, then enter in the password to get into the admin area, then change it in the wireless section. If you haven't got the password to the router ur bolloxed :P

Could always try a factory reset if you know you pppoe username and password. Otherwise call the tech support line I would imagine they can guide you through it

What operating system are you using? What OS' are you housemates using(Is cloning the settings an option)? How are you setting it up? Did you actually select (The right kind of) WPA from the settings list? What router make and model are we talking about? As above, discuss with your housemates and agree on a password to reset it to using the online manual for your router.

    im running windows XP pro,
i have an IT background but not much when it comes to networking, the lads in the house dont know the username/password for the router,
its a sky boardband netgear router, the network key is written on the back of the router, but as i said its an 8 character code(0-9a-Z) and my system is looking for a 10 hex code........this is really wrecking my head

Hi - a 10 digit hexadecimal code would be a 64 bit WEP key. If you're sure the router is looking for a WPA key you would have to change your computer settings to specify that you're connecting via WPA - you might be able to get a driver update for your wireless card that would make this easier?
    (ring the helpdesk!);)
