Hwy just wondering anyone know what the story is with these and getting them? Are they a special order?

I'm heading to he states soon. I dont want to risk just hoping to find a second hand one. Will i have to ring in advance to get one in/to order?

    Thanks

9 month waiting list at the moment as far as I know. You may be able to pick one up second hand or at a smaller store but it'd probably cost you a good bit.

Yep, Guitar Center over here doesn't even deal with Rick anymore, since they can't deliver any guitars.

Try www.the-music-connection.com I got one from them 8 years ago. Good people to deal with. Ric won't allow any stores sell new ones to countries where there is already an agent and here it used to be Waltons, might still be, and Musician Inc stock them too. So you won't be able to buy a new one from an authorised dealer and have it shipped here, you'll most likely be going 2nd hand. I got a 4003 second hand from the aforementioned, cost less than half what it would cost to buy a new one in rip-off Ireland. Bear in mind also, when Thomann had the 4003's in for €1600, Waltons and Musician Inc were charging €2500, so there's a lot of mark-up going on and plenty of bargaining you can do on the cost of a new one.

Also keep an eye on the classifieds on www.talkbass.com - you get a lot of guys selling on quality gear at good prices there. With the shortage of Rics going around, expect to pay about $1200 for a good used one.

If you're thinking of getting a 4003, make sure you play one first. They're a unique design and look amazing, but not very ergonomic. Good looks but not the most comfortable to play. If you do go second hand too, try to avoid getting blinded by the vintage tag and going for a 4001 (pre 82 or thereabouts), they look the same but the 4003 is the better bass. Better pickups and better neck design.
