I have a few mates who did them, got paid VERY well! Was over in Goldmans and Lehmans 2 weeks ago on a grad recruitment drive - UNBELIEVEABLE set up! I take it that you are talikng about banking? What area of banking are you looking at?

Sorry should have said earlier. I've an interest in

    - HR
    - Marketing
    - Consultancy
    - Investment banking... to a lesser degree

I know I'm being very unspecific but I'm not 100% sure what I want to do so any advice appreciated.

    Thanks for the help.

Have you got first in every year in a top university and run half the societies on campus or are you doing a plc course in catering and your only extracurricular activity is drinking?

If you want useful advice you really have to give some info tbh.

If your not willing to do it on a public message board go to your career guidance counsellor.

on a 2.2 studying BBS in Trinity, plenty of extracurricular and work experience, no need to worry about that (apart from it taking down my grades)

To get into an IB in London you have to be hell bent on doing it becausee the competition is so fierce! You dont sound like you want banking so I cant offer any advice in other industries.

    Good luck anyways!

I doubt you would get on an internship programme with an IB or any of the major FMCG companies with a 2.2. Competition for internship places is often more intense than that for graduate places, because there are fewer up for grabs. As a result, your grades need to be excellent and you need to have very strong extracurricular achievements.

Not having done an internship in no way precludes you from getting a position on a graduate programme when you finish college. Best of luck.

2.1 (reasonably expected or already obtained) is usually a required minimum for an internship in IB in London.

I did one this summer in between finishing my undergrad and starting my masters. Sent out quite a few applications, competition was fierce in all the banks. Eventually got through to assessment centre etc and got the internship in one of my preferred choices.

To give you a rough idea of numbers: They told us on our first induction day that they had received c. 40,000 applications (probably trying to boost our egos and give themselves a pat on the back as well!). There were 45 of us who finally made the internship course. You have to really sell yourself if you want to make it.

Just say you're aiming for a 2.1 and hit the books hard.

This is assuming you're actually on course for a third and you told us you are getting a 2.2 and plan to hit the books hard.

HR would be easy enough to get summer work in. Personally I'd say dont bother with it. Overall its a less competitive area then the others you specified so you are limiting yourself.

Consultancies (The snooty / good ones, bcg, mck, roland) will be in many cases more difficult unless you are very international.

Accenture, Deloitte, cap gemini pwc would be easier.

Yeah went to a talk on investment banking and it completely put me off. Think I can rule that out definetly so I'll probably concentrate on consultancy.

Get in touch with the HR departments at all the consultancies companies that you are interested in and ask about their internship programmes.
