does anyone know about the student hardship fund and what kind of financial distress you have to be in to get it? My supervisor has run out of funding for my phd after 3 years and i've about 6 months left do you think its worth a shot applying?

Yes. The Graduate Studies Office sent out a note about this earlier this week, so it's the right time, too. They will, most probably, ask in detail about your financial background (potentially family finances too if you were young (and thus 'dependent' at the time you started), although you can of course make the case that you are not in fact supported by family). However they are unlikely, on past experiences, to pay anything similar to what you might have received by way of PhD funding, so you may want to investigate other sources/loans/etc in parallel. Call in to Alessio/Molly in the GSU (gsu.tcd.ie for office hours) as they will have experience of the various ways in which you can extract money from different sources...

you will need your P21, evidence of pay, whether you are an independant or a dependant student all that, 2 months bank satements utility bills, loan forms

give them every scrap of paper you have (even bus tickets). (photo copy them as you wont see them again)

I applied 3 times each time i was refused. after you take may fees off im on 3000 euro a year. i was working 3-4 nights a week to get by in a bar.
but then i was told ' due to th large volume of applications.... feck off u get nothing'

one or two really nice people in there but i cant understand how i didnt qualify for it. overall a bit of a sham really. bit like most of Trinity College a few helpful faces but overall... sham.

    Good luck all the same.
