    Hi,

i was wondeing if it is possible to connect two computers with a lan cable?

I have a laptop and a desktop and I want to be able to copy some files across from my desktop but I dont want to have to keep copying onto disk to do this this.

Surely their must be a easier way say through the Lan and a programme to run it?

    Thanks for any help!

Yes, you can connect the two PCs together using the LAN ports, but you need a special Ethernet cable called a crossover cable.

You should be able to buy one of these online, or make one yourself if you have access to cables, RJ45 heads and a crimper (you can find the cabling details online - look up Ethernet crossover).

You will also need to give your PCs static IP addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.1 on the first and 192.168.1.2 on the second).

    You can.

If you have ethernet ports on both computers, and a crossover cable your all set. Plug in and go....lol

yes. if connecting the two directly use a cross over wire. Also turn on file and printer sharing. You may want to make sure both are using the same workgroup name too.

do you have a third party firewall?

Wow thanks for all your replies!

Just one last thing is a lan cable that i have on my Broadband box different to a crossover lan cable?

    Thanks Again!

Yes. A normal LAN cat5 cable is wired straight, a crossover cable is wired "crossed over" so to speak.

Yes. They will be wired differently. You could connect both computers (using a straight cable) through the broadband box. Then you dont have to worry about static IP addresses or (crossover cable)

I was going to suggest that...... two straight cat5 cables into the broadband router would do the trick
