    - 40GB doesn't play PS2 games, 60GB does (although not perfectly in all cases). It does play PSone games, though.
    - 40GB according to some reports runs even quieter than the 60GB
    - 40GB is speculated to be using a cooler 65nm Cell processor since it has fewer vents
    - 40GB has a matte silver strip on the front instead of the reflective chrome strip on the 60GB
    - 40GB has improved wifi and bluetooth modules, so they may be more robust.

That's about it. 60GB are still available, but once they're sold out, they're gone for good.

Oh, and the 2 fewer USB ports and no card readers!

    Hey Goose,

The 40GB doesn't have backwards compatibility, it has 2 USB ports instead of 4 and it doesn't have a built in card reader.
There are plenty of 60GB models still available and to be honest they make more sense to go for. I was going to get the 40GB for €399 but it came with no games whereas I got the 60GB with all of the extra features, 2 games and a Blu-Ray movie for €496 which was much better value.

The 40GB has no Backwards Compatability, it also has no card readers and only 2 USB slots.
The 60GB has BC, has a card reader and 4 USB slots.
the 60GB is while stocks last.

Also, if you wait a short while, spideman 3 on blu-ray might be bundled with the 40GB, rumour has it from the start of November. Although there's already various retailer deals out there for both the 40GB and 60GB.

Looks like the same one I got in HMV. 60 gig, 2 games and a bluray disc for just under €500

Yep I got mine in HMV, it seems to be the best deal around.

Didn't know that, glad I went for the 60G now.

There doesn't seem to be any good deals on the 40G yet. Gamestop are offering some basketball game with the 40G for 420 euro I think. Virgin had one offer, one game and a Bluray movie for 450.

the 60G offers for in or around 500 euro seem much better value. You'll get 2 or 3 games and maybe a bluray movie for 500-520 euro.

Backwards compatibility, memory card slots, extra USB ports and bigger hard disk are all nice bonuses too. Definitely worth the little bit extra.

There might be more offers on the 40G closer to Christmas though. At the moment, Argos and Tesco and many other retailers don't seem to have much. Probably getting rid of the 60G ones first.

Yeah, I think they want to sell through the 60GB. There's rumours that there will be a PES08 40GB bundle later for example, for 430, which would probably be pretty attractive.

The USB ports and card readers are pretty small things though. You can always plug in dirt-cheap card readers and multi-port extenders if you need them into the 40GB version. The PS2 BC is really the biggest difference (well, in the hardware itself I mean..obviously the bundled games on the 60GB at the moment add a lot of value too!).

it plays DVD's fine and plays Blu-Ray DVD's but it will not play HD-DVD's as thats a different format .

    picked up a 40 gig in gamestop with a game today for €415 (minus €260 for trading in a 360 ) .

As said above me, it'll play DVD's just fine. It'll even upscale them for you.
