Sorry folks if this is in the wrong section.

My sister just txt me telling me she was off sick for 4 days and just returned back with a sick note. She is working there a few months but has not been made permanent yet.

Her boss told her she wouldnt be getting paid for the 4 days.

I told her this is correct as she is only temporary?

Am I correct? or is she entitled to the pay?

    thanks !!

There is no set rule, it’s whatever the contract your friend got states.

Some employers will give sick to noone, some to everyone and some differentiate between temporary and permanent staff.

So does your friend has a contract and what does it contain about sick pay?

just be thankful you're not a permanent employee of 5 years who isnt getting paid a penny for 3 weeks of certified sick leave.

You should still be able to get money off social welfare, right? I thought the Government would basically pay you the dole for every sick day off after 3 days?

As others have said, sick pay is not a legal right. She may be able to claim Illness Benefit from the Department of Social and Family Affairs if she has enough social insurance contributions, but it may not be worth it.

Hardly compares to the amount you're losing though. Certainly, there is no legal obligation to pay sick leave, but there is a big difference between legal obligation and so-called "best practice". A GOOD employer does pay. In fact, I don't think I've ever worked for an employer who made an issue out of this. Until now that is.
