Setting controls for UFH - help!

We just moved into our new house (hooray!), and there's underfloor heating throughout downstairs, which is great. The heat and comfort are terrific. I'd be grateful for some advice, though, from anyone who's had it a while.

What's the most efficient way of setting the controls? Should it be set to
    1. Constantly on
    2. On for set periods, eg 6-8AM, 4-11PM
    3. On for short periods, eg 6-8AM, 4-6PM, 9-10PM
The controls can be set for up to 3 periods a day, and it's independent of the radiators and water heating. I'm just wondering if there would be any advantage to leaving it constantly on, on the principle that it might take less energy to bring the floor up to 19degrees or whatever?
