travel Tripod eg, MANFROTTO 718B

hi i know you guys know your stuff and i bet this has been asked before but.. cant find specific answers

i am heading around the world and trying to be a keen photo person:D... i have a 350d with couple of lenses and have a uber sh1te tripod.

going to the temples in ankor wat and wanna have a tripod that will survive the abuse of backpacking etc and looked at this one MANFROTTO 718B

just wondering for about 100 euro ish what should i get, i am pretty tall 6':eek: so would like a half decent height

hey, presumably the couple of lenses you'd be loading onto it are fairly standard? Looks like it'd do the job alright, you'd just have to be wary about loading it down.

yea just 28-105 and the 70-300 bog standard.

Id say go for it then.. You may still have bother getting it through some airport security, but that's the case with all tripods.

Yeah I've got that tripod. It's really sturdy and strong for one that folds up small enough to go in a small backpack, but I'd be weary about it if you ever got any big heavy lenses in the future (its max load is 2.5 kg i think)

I think UK airports cause most of the problems.. but any airport security may take issue with it being over size or over weight or (my personal favorite) "a risk to security".

I can see the headlines.. "Crazed photographer hi-jacks Boeing 737 with a travel tripod"

might end up putting in the main backapack.... prob get distroyed by the throwers, i mean baggage technicians

should be ok if you wrap it in a towel and position it in the centre of the bag. I do it all the time and the other half doesnt like it at all !
I bring a rather larger tripod in a suitcase
She must "support" me in my decisions !

I've got that Tripod - cost about €75 a couple fo years ago.

Then I would advise against it! It's not that high. Even for a (relative) short @r$e like me I find it quite low sometimes.

BTW - I had this tripod in my hand luggage at Bergamo airport last year and got into a bit of bother with security (I ended up checking it in)

ok , what about velbon? i can get them pretty cheap and they seem compact...

any ideas?
