New PC doesn't stay shut down

I've built a new PC, all workin fine, apart from when I shut down the computer from Windows. It just starts up again after shutting down. It's different from a restart, in that it shuts off for maybe a second or two, but then starts up again.

I have to turn off the switch on the PSU at the back of the PC to stop it from starting up again.

Anyone know what this might be?

Have a look in the BIOS. Anything enabled there that would cause it to power up, such as pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse? Sounds odd but there is such a 'feature'.

u shutting it down properly? vista has a low power state tab that looks like a stand by button (could be mistaken for shut down) beside that is a lock tab then a arrow tab click on the arrow tab and it will have all your shut down/restart options

check your BIOS for "WAKE ON LAN" or "WAKE ON MODEM"

if you are hooked up to a router/modem then it can wake up your pc.
Also, as above, you might have some wake on USB setting that it being activated by a printer or web cam or something charging.

I shut it down properly (using the arrow and then "Shut Down"), and plugged out all of my USB devices and network cable before doing it, but it still happens.

I did build the PC myself, could it be something to do with the power switch connectors being plugged into the motherboard wrong? But I never press the button when I'm shutting down, and it works grand for switching it on.

Also, when I switch off the PSU at the back, it doesn't suddenly boot up when I switch it back on (the PSU, not the PC), so I don't think it's a Wake-on-Lan type thing.

try shutting it down this way, but it shouldnt make a lick of difference.

well wake on LAN will on activate when it gets/sends a signal so it wont be instantaneous.

Check your bios again, I once accidentally set a PC to turn itself on at 12:01 every day, was freaking me out for a while.

I know that in XP there's a command

    shutdown -r

which will force the PC to shutdown & immediately restart.

Is there anything similar in Vista?

There's a good article on this problem but it's XP related, nonetheless it could still be relevant to your problem:

One of the points mentioned is the inbuilt setting in Windows which interprets a dodgy shutdown (for whatever reason) as a "System Failure" & the setting is set to automatically restart after "System Failure"

The setting in XP can be found by going to

    Start
    Right Click "My Computer"
    Choose "Properties"
    Click on the "Advanced" TAB

It's a check box under the "Startup and Recovery" settings section.

You can see the article here:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Troubleshooting-Windows-Shutdown.html

I'm sure you know this too but...
The button that appears in the start menu with the power symbol on it
( 0 and 1 ) is actually not a shutdown. It puts the comp in sleep mode.
The shutdown option is now under the menu opened via the little arrow.
