I want to partition a laboratory area into smaller sub-areas.

Assuming that I go for the usual studs + plasterboard, is there any cheap, good-appearance and cleanable covering that I can put on the plasterboard?
Skim-coating is too dear as there would be a lot of mini-areas.
I've heard of some vinyl type covering but no one in builders' merchants has heard of it.
The finished partition surface must be cleanable with a damp sponge.
    Ideas welcome.

Altro , the floor and wall covering people do a paint . But if your in food business then do the job right - skim your walls first . EHO will get you .

The vinyl product you refer to may be polyflor. This is a plain PVC sheet material that is a cheap floor covering. It also comes in a version for walls (polyclad), there are a number of different types for various areas, non-slip with a rough surface, wet area that is rough as well as having small bumps, any static etc, it comes in a number of gauges from 1.5 - 4mm afaik. Its not amazingly pretty, but its designed to be a cheap flooring. It's used in alot of council social housing sites. Website is polyflor.com, contains pics and colour charts etc

    Not in food testing.
Just industrial materials. But must still have appearance of reasonably clean area.
I'll call Altro tomorrow about that paint.
    And Polyflor too.
    Thanks.

Altro focus on solid wall coverings like the wall-lining that they do for butchers' shops and restaurant kitchens. Great job but awful pricey. Distributor said that he'd call back with any paint ideas. No call yet.
Polyflor is basically a flooring product. Can be used on walls but too dear by far.

I'm leaning towards vinyl wallpaper, with maybe another base layer paper between the vinyl and the plasterboard . . . .

If you're looking for cheap, try the sticky backed plastic as sold in art shops or similar places. It comes in rolls approx 1m wide x 3m long
