Sorry to bring this up again - although there are suprisingly few posts in this forum on fan noise.

Just got a PS3 (for Blue-Ray, haven't even bought a game yet!). So, a "quiet" machine is fairly essential to me.

The machine is certainly quieter than a 360 (which I got for HD-DVD and never use). The fans of the PS3 kick in when on "dashboard", but it's the type of sound that concerns me. The fans seem to make a sound rather like a low drone. The nearest I can compare it to is the sound a fridge might make (but much lower). It is certainly louder than my SkyHD box but quite a bit (which I almost never hear) and can be heard from a good 15 feet away.

It is not as loud as the Xbox360 on dashboard (which I think is totally unacceptable for watching movies) or even this laptop I'm typing on at the moment. If the PS3 sounded like a normal PC fan, it could be alright. It's just that the "drone" might get on my nerves. Is this normal?

    Many thanks
