Nice shots, the green, blue and purple ones would be my favourites. Nice processing on them too albeit a bit soft but I take it these were with a prime wide open? Good job

No, most were with my 80-200 f2.8. I was using manual settings though.

I like the green trumpet one, nice atmospheric silhouette.

5 and 8 are a bit scary, but I reckon this is more down to the moment you captured rather than Duke actually being scary, for me anyway.

1st and 2nd, I wouldn't be a fan of - Seem a bit soft, very little contrast, and generally don't like the poses.

3rd is grand, wouldn't mind a bit more contrast though.

5th would be my pick of the bunch.

6th, I don't like, the colours don't work at all.

Actually, I could apply the following to the whole bunch - more contrast in your shadows - they're just not hard enough, and it's coming across as softness.

See you next Friday though, I'll give you a run for yer money :p

    Just a few thoughts Stephen;

1 - the pose aint great although technically i like what your were getting at
2 - the pose again.... well how do i put this 'looks like daffy duck about to do a donald duck impression???' apologies to 'duffy' ;o)
3 - i like. the greens running through black are effective - although might it be 'teddy the trumpeter' as opposed to 'duke special'. ok - it might be a trademark pose perhaps(?) and hence that mightn't matter
4 - scary! the photo is ok but urrggghhhhh... scary stuff
    5 - i like - colours nice, etc.
6 - has potential of being interesting - maybe too soft but it was probably a challenging shooting scenario.
7 - interesting lighting. well caught. pose (maybe angle) a little odd
    to my eye.

    8 - not for me.

you'd probably know this better than i do but the damn thing with music event photography is that every fecin musician has a microphone stuck in the middle of their mug. If looking for that clichéd term 'distracting' - microphones are bloody distracting.

Numbers 4 and 8. He's giving you looks that could kill. Perhaps he's trying to tell you something :p
