How many birds?

    Location Dublin city.
Just installed a Triax TD 1 metre dish with a single lnb and a DB500S receiver.
Receiving channels from 28'13'23'19'16'East and 4' West.

Was expecting a few more from the west and at least Turksat on 42E and hispasat on 30W?
Pretty sure the installation is OK but perhaps the LNB is a bit lame.

Question is how many birds should I expect from my setup and if I wanted more what would be required?

    Ta.

have to ask the obvious questions, is mount perfectly vertical?, motor angle and dish angle correct for your location?,are you using diseqc 1.2 or usals ?, if diseqc 1.2 what sat are you using as true south,5w for your location.if you are getting sats on eastern side only it could mean the mounting pole is leaning slightly to the west. you should easily get 42e,10e,7e,5e,3e,1w,5w,8w,15w,30w also when set up properly. doubt you are getting 4w as i thought that needed a huge dish.

i also have a 1m dish in santry and i'm getting all the above (not 4w) plus 39e 36e 33e 26e (not everything during bad weather) 9e 12.5w and some feeds and channels on the following 21e 18w 22w 24.5w 27.5w 31.5w 34.5w 43w and 45w. my motor wont go any further east than 42 . i probably would pick up 58w as well but theres houses in the way and its very low on the horizon. that makes a total of 30 satellites that i get on a 1m dish with a .2db titanium lnb. hope this helps. look up lyngsat for footprints of each sat to see what you should get for your location. 33e seems only to work on a 1m dish on the east coast up as far as dublin/meath. 26e would probably be similar.

    I am using diseqc1.2.
For the installation I faced true south using a compass. Then proceeded to find 28E.Aligned that up and got most of the channels I mentioned.

The receiver has the gotoXX function so I inserted the values for my location in Dublin which is 53.2N and 6.1W.

Perhaps I should have used 5W as true south as mayto mentioned and then worked from there.Would that be correct?

Yes correction on the 4W this one I am not getting.

Use 5west as your true south sat. I.E. the center point of your arc. I use 8west here in Roscommon but 5 west should be fine for you.

    East http://www.lyngsat.com/europe.html
    42 (west), 39, some 36, some 33, 28.2/28.5, some 26, some 23.5, 19.2, 16, 13, 10, 7, some 4.8

    West http://www.lyngsat.com/atlantic.html
    some 1, 5, 8, 15, 22, 30, 45 +others with feeds

    110cm Dish.
Doesn't make much difference what LNB used.

You readjust the true south by making sure dish is 100% square on arm. peak elevation of dish on 5W and peak signal on 30W or 42E by rotate of whole motor on pole, the mount will then be at true south = 6.1W

I put together a list of 'beacon transponders' for sats on the arc (from 53E to 63W) on the wiki along with a quality level on a 1.2M dish and a Technomate 1500. Channels with quality < 50% might be too difficult to receive on an 80cm.

    great info lads.thanks.

i am still struggling to find western birds and far east ones such as turksat.

It looks as if the dish is not mounted perfectly straight so tomorrow its out with the old drill again!hehe!

Make sure to inspect the actual motor mount - my pole was entirely vertical but I was losing western tracking something monster - the actual motor mount was out of line. Good size 13 shoeing got it straight again, can do 45-45 now with no major issues.

    yep will do.

    question for Triax dish owners.
The bracket that attaches the dish to the motor (the one that adjusts declination) it does not say in the manual which way to fit it.
Does it matter which side the angle values are on?
hope you get what I mean.
i will try some photos tomorrow for better reference.

I have the longer end near the top. That said, I'm only using multi-LNB setup, no motor. Still, this should still work.

You'd flip it around the other way if you can't get the dish elevation to go high enough.

(DISEQ 1.2) with motor on 11E...find Sirius 5E.motor on 53(latitude)..and you just have to play with the remote control to find and save al sat.53E to 30w:)

ah the old pole was not too straight so been up on the roof again tonight and got that sorted.

So now gettin channels from Turksat 42E.will try some west ones later but its lookin better.

Its funny because when you use the "SatFind" feature on the DB500 some transponders are strong and others are weak.
This kinda threw me a little when searching for birds.

    Sweeeeeeeeeet!

I've been looking for exactly that for a while.
The wiki is worth a high Google ranking for that alone. Ta

Thanks for the list Zaphod. Great info. I have printed it off and added it to the info file in my van to use on the road.
