I should be eligible for this, as I got over 545 in the LC, but I've heard nothing of it. I heard there'd be a small ceremony and I presumed I'd be notified about it, but I've heard nothing so far...

Anyone have any info on this?

End of October/November is when you should be asking iirc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 793 ✭✭✭xeduCat

Ceremony's not until the end of November - you should get something in the post in the next while anyway.

For those who got it and spend a year off records can they still claim the second half of their exhibition prize in SF year?

Ah right, thanks. I'd forgotten about it until I was asked to buy a Digital Logic book which is €70 new. I could use that voucher....

    Do not buy that book.

there are like 10 copies in the library.

Heh, yeah I know, though the new editions aren't in yet, might be this week.

Just the fact that we were advised to buy a book reminded me that I was entitled to this award/free book voucher.

Doesnt matter about the new editions - it differs very little, and tbh most of the problems are cases where the assignments are different due to the technicians using different chips.

amazon is your friend if you're buying books.

Is it 545 definitely, or does it fluctuate? Damn 15 points...

No, it's the same every year.

Are you sure about that? I only ask because I asked admissions and was told it depends on how many people got that many points. Not that i'd trust them entirely though, the woman I was speaking to had a very "i'd rather be anywhere but here" look.

    2007/2008: http://www.tcd.ie/info/calendar/pdf/prizesawards.pdf
    2005/2006: http://web.archive.org/web/20060719160924/www.tcd.ie/assets/documents/calendar/part1_prizes_and_other_awards.pdf

And while the web archive doesn't appear to like before 2006, my memory tells me over 545 is what it has been for several years.

As far as I know, since the latest marking system for the Leaving Cert was introduced, the aim has been to award students, whose performance is better than six A2's in the Leaving Cert, or the equivalent grades in other exams.

Amazon ain't your friend for buying books.

www.abebooks.com is your friend! Really old editions do for lots of the CS books like Digital Logic and electrotech and telecoms. You should be able to get them all for a tenner each

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 793 ✭✭✭xeduCat

Also, for new books (or imported US stuff), the Book Depository (bookdepository.co.uk) (who also sell via play.com) are useful - they don't charge for postage, normally sell well below the list price and don't screw you on the sterling conversion.

Meh, I found an ebook of it :p

Its all the same really what with web services. abebooks will have stuff that you can't find on amazon though.

Does that mean that EVERYONE in certain courses coming straight from school will get it, eg med and law? etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

    I guess so.

got mine delivered today... no mention of HMV, just waterstones, hodges figgis and easons. I live in hope though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

but on the hodges and figgis voucher (if you choose to exchange it there) they give you hodges and figgis gift vouchers which you can use in HMV (check terms and conditions on the back).

Most people do from what I remember.

Is it odd that I haven't received mine yet? When is the reception on?

There are multiple receptions (all in the same week I think though).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

Quick question on the dress code for the reception. What does "semi-formal" mean exactly? A shirt and tie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭nedward

Eh, I'm going to wear a suit, basically because I like wearing suits, but I think semi-formal is basically wear your most expensive gear, ie designer jumper over Calvin shirt or something like that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

Designer jumper over Calvin shirt? eww...

    I guess I'll wear a suit.

I always took semi-formal to be a good pair of jeans, shoes and a shirt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

Same, but then my mom insisted it meant I had to wear a "dinner jacket" and a tie. My friend said "the best you have without going out and buying anything new", which sounded like the best plan to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

I went with slacks and a shirt, was one of the less dressed-up people at mine iirc. Dinner jacket may be a tad OTT, but jeans might be a tad under-dressed. Then again, they're not going to kick you out either way, so pretty much just wear what you feel comfortable with.

If you're wearing a suit consider at least wearing a hat. Also, a cane if possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

Ooh, and a monacle, and a proper dinner jacket with tails. And when you go to take your photo with the HeggoBot*, comment loudly that some people just don't seem to be giving this prestigious event the sartorial consideration it deserves, while eyeing up his mis-matched stripes and "cool" "young" glasses distastefully. Hell, now I wanna go!

    * I've abandoned the theory that I heard soon after I got to TCD that the real Hegarty never leaves his mansion and that all public Hegarty photos are actually a series of cardboard cutouts; instead, I choose to believe that his focus on the Hamilton end is part of a grand scheme involving cheap, student-made robot clones and world domination. The first prototype clone currently handles all public and DVD appearances** while the real thing soaks in his pool of molten gold and cackles. Co-incidentally, he also has a monacle.

While we're not on the topic, I want to get my hands on the College Mace.

    Seriously. It's 400 years old.

Jeans aren't semi formal. By strict definition semiformal counts as a black tie suit. For women, it's a cocktail dress.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

What's formal for a guy, then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭europerson

Most guys who go wear trousers, a shirt and a tie. Any not-overly-casual jacket will do.

As far as I understand it, these are the modern rules:

Really formal = whitetie, i.e. tails
Formal = blacktie, i.e. dinner jacket (unless it's not afternoon yet, in which case morning suit)
    Semi-formal = suit with tie
Smart casual = shirt and trousers

    So now you know.

All we got was the vice Provost! And not even so much as a, "we are very sorry that the Provost could not be here today". I feel cheated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

Well it's not that big a deal in the academic standing. It's nowhere near as prestigious as Schols etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭qz

Thought it was a good night last night, didn't chance the wine as I assumed it was the usual filth served up in the GMB =]

    The band were good though.

The Provost isn't obliged to attend Entrance Exhibition Award Ceremonies!

The letter clearly stated "you will have an opportunity to get a photo taken with the Provost".

    (not that I actually care)
