Myself and the girlfriend are off to Amsterdam in November but are clueless in where to stay..Googled digs on the net but don't really know where to stay..preferably close to that big square where Madame Tussauds is,would be nice or near the river.
Does anyone know a nice and reasonable b&b to stay near here that's not near the red light district?

I recently came back from Amsterdam but stayed with a relitive.
Their was a youth hostel next to the vondel park ,about half a mile from the Leidsplien district ,a few tram rides from dam square , but as it was a few years since i stayed there, i am not sure if it's still open Try typing in ' Hostels in amsterdam ' on google, see how you get on ? .

Cheers ..is that Leidsplien district area where all the nightlife is?..i think i was there before and stayed in a hostel close by but don't think she'd be up for that this time round..

Yes, but the hostel we stayed in was quite a bit away from leidsplien area , near the rikes museam (spelling) their was a lot of familys staying there which gave it a homly athmosphere .good luck in your search .

last time in amsterdam we stayed at the hans brinker hostel http://www.hans-brinker.com/

location is good, away from the red light, only 200 feet or so from the tram stop (about 4-5 stops to central station). The rooms are decent (at least the private rooms are, not sure about the dorms).

amsterdam hostels are notoriously bad and staying in a dorm with various junkies from all the world IS NOT a good idea imo (my friends experienced hell in an amsterdam dorm)

big plus for hans brinker is the fact that it has its own bar AND its own nightclub deep in the bowels of the building. The nightclub stays open till 5am on Saturday night

Thats called Damm Square. I stayed in the RHO hotel last year. Location great and prices pretty good for 2.5 * budget hotel.

Hostelworld do Apartments, guesthouses and cheap hotels as well as hostels. There's one very good one there, it's a 3 storey apartment that can sleep 4 (so if it's for two people I think you still have to pay for 4 people) I think it was €60 per person which is very good for the centre of Amsterdam. It's a good looking apartment with wood floors and all mod cons.
