I've been in Paris for La Feté de la musique which is a series of massive free music events and I don't think that a free concert on new years in one place would be doable from a logistics and safety stand point based on what I saw.

The largest acts they had was at the Arche de la Défense which had a square that held 80,000 people and that was some French crooners Id never heard of. It was chaotic getting anywhere (in a nice way but still slooow) and all the streets were jammed. Thats not including 10s of thousands of other people scattered across the entire city at the smaller free events as well.

I could be wrong but have they ever had a large scale event at the base of the Eiffel Tower? The only place to have the crowd is on all the lovely manicured grass there and it would be akin to having an event in Stephens Green... it would be ruined.

No, just a huge rumour. I still hear people talking about it to this day though (along with other rumours of Guy-Manuel being deaf ). Thankfully I never really believed it so never got my hopes up.

It would have been some experience though!

Daft Punk are still number one on my list of bands to see live, can't believe I still haven't seen them. They're recording a new album at the moment so I'm sure that will mean a tour :)
