1.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo

Would this be better and faster ina laptop than say a core duo 1.86GHZ, which would people here recommend??

Go with the core2duo, the conroe architecture more than makes up for the difference in clock speed

Good comparision here, for equal clock speed core 2 duo about 10% faster, but depending application could be as high as 25%.

Battery life of core duo 10% better

ok, i just picked two from the dell site for comparison,

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 Processor (1.6GHz,800MHz,2MB L2 cache)

Intel Core Duo T2400 Processor (1.83 GHz,667MHZ,2MB L2 Cache)

Well you said 1.4ghz in the title

I'd probably go for 1.8ghz core over 1.4ghz core 2
And for the 1.6ghz core 2 over the 1.8ghz core

Not really any problem with the core duo, but doesn't support 64-bit, and for the same ghz is slower, as you can see the motherboard on the new machines run faster at 800mhz which also give a performance boost
