Hi, Would anyone know of software that can monitor, record and manage many IP cameras, so one could log into it over the web and monitor all the camera's interfaced to the box? also if the system could have motion detection, so only when something is moving it will record, etc..

I;m hoping to find something based on Linux,

Anyone using the same else where?

    Thanks

    you might some information here

i don't know much about the different software applications available, but i did manage to find security problems with 1 particular program - which was being installed for someone i know well.

overall i think alot are written without security as a priority.
They open up holes in a computer that would not be there in the first place.

large/small businesses now want the option of remote viewing, and they really aren't able to manage the security of the system.(don't know about linux)

probably small businesses are more at risk than larger ones..you have to remember, there are alot of cowboys in the industry.

Not sure why you want to persevere with Linux. Any decent CCTV apps on either *nix or *doze cost money. There are some projects on sourceforge have a look over there.

    Zoneminder fits your requirements.
It's available as a VMware virtual appliance also if you want to evaluate it with minimum effort.

correction - that would be a LiveCD

Anyway, a LiveCD is arguably better than a VM because you can either:
    1. boot your PC from the LiveCD without making any changes to your existing PC s/w.
    OR
    2. create a blank VM on your existing PC and boot the LiveCD:
2.1 either the physical CD or
2.2 the ISO file without burning a CD.

When I played with ZoneMinder I did option 2.2 on vmware - thus my bumsteer on the vm... apols!

Not to worry... installing to a VM as we speak...

Thanks for that crashedminded, just testing it out too!, have you used it before in setups?

I've only played with it - with one webcam to get a feel for it.

This is more of a longterm background project for me:
    • I did do a bit of research to shortlist solutions and decided ZoneMinder was best fit for my requirements.
    • The playing around with it was to verify, based on what I read, that it was the best fit.

So I can't say I've done a full scale deployment. However, it's reassuring to know there's lots of independent Zoneminder material out there e.g.:
    HowToForge
    Linux.com
