The greatest press freedom is found in northern Europe (Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands and Norway), which is a haven of peace for journalists. Of the top 20 countries, only three (New Zealand 9th, Trinidad and Tobago 11th and Canada 18th) are outside Europe.

    Full Story Here

Its good to see us doing so well in this report,a couple of interesting results if you read it such as the UK only coming in way down the list with 8 Eastern European countries and El Salvador ahead of them.Even the US is ahead of the UK on this list.

I'm always really proud of our standing in this list. Ireland has a great record for journalism. Part of the problem in the UK is that the Freedom of Information act is heavily curtailed and it is too easy for the Government/public bodies to refuse information based on infringement of privacy, thus making it diffucult for the press.

There is also stringent anti-terrorism laws and privacy of the royal family to contend with so journalists are very prohibited when trying to access certain information. I think on a day-to-day basis British journalists probably don't have it that bad but either way, I'm glad to see that Ireland comes out way ahead...now if only our journalists would make proper use of that freedom.

Irelands record for serious investigative journalism is pretty wretched. There has never been an "Insight" (Sunday Times) type team on any paper here and the libel laws are so tight that has to count against press freedom

This is why the UK is way down...

"The United Kingdom’s ranking (28th) is largely due to the situation in Northern Ireland, where journalists are constantly threatened by paramilitary groups. The investigation into the 2001 murder of Sunday World journalist Martin O'Hagan has come to a complete standstill".

... and they also spell Ireland wrong in that PDF.
