I hate to say it, but unless it's a complete labour of love he'd be far better off selling the car he has and buying a perfect one. Best of luck though, i've always had a big soft spot for the W116.

I wuz wondering what a W166 was! Is this car by any chance a brown/beige number from Wicklow?

Too late for that now , car is in great condition mechanically but bits like the bumper , and various body parts have rusted badly.

Anyone know if there are owners club for this car ?

That one came to mind with me too. That one has to be the most unattractive colour combination I've seen on an old merc.

To the best of my knowledge nobody does reproduction body and trim parts for the 116. You can still get most bits 'n' pieces through the dealers but its expensive.

Your best bet would be German eBay or get in touch with a breaker in the UK.

If you send me your email address I will get you a list of contacts that me be of some use - mercmad@gmail.com

Hadrians Panels list a few items for teh 116.

    http://www.perfectpanels.co.uk/index_catalogues.htm

They have two agents in Ireland (Kilkenny & Kerry)

Never used any of their panels myself but I believe they are supposed to be OK.

It would be cheaper to buy a good one than to restore a rough one tbh, there's actually a beautiful 6.9 for sale in Deerpark motors, I was up looking at another car there a couple of weeks ago and it was only 19,950 euros, a cheap car considering what it is.

Have to agree with those that say get a decent one to start with... if it has rusty bumpers, as you say it has, the bodywork is probably shot. Chromework was typically the last thing to rot.

However, there's a guy advertising 116 parts on ebay Ireland sometimes... though he's never responded to queries from me.
