How to cancel bid on ebay?

The auction ends in under 12 hours now. I believe the bidder is bidding on their own items and I want to withdraw my bid.

I also tried asking the seller a question about the item but they have not answered.
    edit--

He answered the question but not really. He just said, yes its the one your after mate (insert model number) but doesn't confirm it has the feature I want.

He then asked me to confirm how I would be paying as I'm on a new account (used to buy on my fathers account when I was younger) and said we might be able to settle a deal before the auction ends.

According to eBay's bid retraction rules
    eBay wrote:
Up to twelve hours before the end of the listing: All bids you've placed on that item will be automatically cancelled when you submit the form.

During the last twelve hours of the listing: Your most recent bid will be automatically cancelled, as long as you placed it in the last hour. If you want to cancel a bid you placed more than an hour ago, please ask the seller to cancel your bid. eBay can't cancel your bid for you.
Not much help for you since you're down to 12 hours left. You may be stuck with the bid. If your account is new you could walk away from it and start again.

Since you believe the seller is bidding on his own item to up the price you could report him to eBay.
and said we might be able to settle a deal before the auction ends.
Is he suggesting you do this outside of eBay? If so I'd stay away as you'll have no protection.

I've already done this but it won't really help me as they say they won't tell me the outcome. How will I know if the user was shill bidding and will I be able to cancel my bid if the user was shill bidding?

Looked like it on first read but he might just be trying to end the auction early. I was more worried that he asked for my max bid as then he could bid just below it come the end of the auction and I'd have to pay my max bid amount. Looks like he's trying to suss me out to scam me which is why I want out. I know a friend who recently purchased a phone on ebay and never recieved it. He bought from a power seller too.

    BTW, thanks for your reply.

That, I couldn't tell you. I'd imagine if they find out he is shill bidding then they'd remove his auctions, including recently ended ones. You wouldn't be obliged to pay then.

If he's trying to find your max bid, then maybe tell him a number that's 15-20 above your actual. Then, if you're right, his shill account will outbid you just at the end and you're in the clear.

Is the amount you have bid now acceptable to you? If so, and he ends the auction early, would you be willing to pay this much? That might be the most amicable way to end this without things getting messy and possibly getting you in trouble.

I'm willing to pay the current bid but given his actions so far (or my suspicions), I'm not too trusting that the guy will send the item at all if I buy it although he as a lot of positive feedback.

I'm thinking I'll just ignore his question and act like I've not checked my messages until nearer the end of the auction. If I win, I'll pay through paypal and see how things go since I'll have paypal protection.

Its a bit stupid that you can't cancel bids for suspicion of shilling and the like but sure what can you do? Buyer beware and all that.

    edit ---

okay now there is another bidder that has driven the price higher that has also only delt with this buyer and has 4 bid retractions. Has bid on 14 items from this seller, 26 bids on one item and 19 on another. This has to be shilling. User is only registered 30 days or less and has zero feedback.

My bid is about £40 GBP below amazon's price for the item so I'm hoping he outbids me and I can leave it at that. If it goes up by over £5 then I'll lose the auction.

Thanks, your plan of telling him my max bid was higher than it was worked. He started contacting me telling me quickly to put in my max bid and everything.

Oh my god, he retracted the bid. He messaged me an hour or so before the auction ended when he had a higher bet after I told him my max bid so he told me to put in my max bid to ensure I'd win it.

I didn't bother and retracted his bid after the auction ended and messaged telling me I was lucky I got it for such a good price. The reason marked for retracting the bid was feedback when his bidder 1 id had 9 pieces of feedback, 100% positive for buying.

I have sent all these details to ebay telling them I'm not paying and they should delete this auction and I said I'll forward on the messages if they want them.

Seems like you were right about him shilling on his own auction. Hopefully eBay will cancel the whole thing. If you forward the emails that he sent you asking for your max bid, including the headers, that should help. I'm pretty sure sellers aren't allowed to do this. I think Seller Non-performance might be best heading to report him under.

I've reported him for shilling and described the exact series of events to them and told them I'll forward on the emails if required by them and that they can contact me if they need them.

How do I know if they've canceled the auction or if they've even bothered to read the email. There is no proper notification at all. At the moment, it feels like I'm in no mans land. All I got was an automated reply telling me they'll look into the issue within the next 24-48 hours. Well thats not much use if I'm supposed to pay now is it?

They seem to take a very half arsed approach to disputes.

Not to worry, they are generally pretty on the ball about this stuff. Anyway, with a new account you have nothing to lose. If worst comes to worst, just don't pay, and abandon the account.

I always bid in the last seconds so I won't be put in a position like you were.
Its the early bidders that drive prices up, I have seen bidding frenzy's with 4 days to go till the end of auction. Yeah some might be the sellers uping the price but when I look at the bidders none have previous transactions with the seller.
In future bid as close to the end of auction as you can, 9 times out of 10 I get the item for a lot less than I was willing to pay, although I was bidding on an item a few weeks ago and I lost by 10c.

    oops sorry :D

Just kidding, you can always use snipe. Determine how much your max bid is on the item and leave it at that. Doesnt push the price up early and saves you sitting at your computer and getting over excited :D

Did they get back to you yet?

Has this gone anywhere for you yet? If eBay remove the auction you'll get a mail (as the winning bidder) informing you and telling you that you don't have to pay. If eBay are doing nothing about this guy then he could start NPB procedure against you. You'll be given the opportunity to reply to that though.
