Reclaiming tax from unused flights

Whenever ryanair have a sale I always book flights for 1c, but theres often an extra 9.99 in taxes and charges added on.

I dont always use these flights and I saw on the front of a newspaper recently about reclaiming these taxes, stupidly I didnt bother reading the article.

Does anyone know how to go about this? I've emailed them but (shock shock horror horror) havent gotten any reply.

They usually charge a large administration fee in excess of the taxes.

I tried this a couple of years ago without success - they have an administration fee of €20 (might even have gone up since then) which tends to exceed the taxes paid.

There should be instructions on how to claim (if you want to give it a go) on the Ryanair website.

Are they legally entitled to charge an admin fee to refund a tax that was never theirs?
Is there anyway to find out if the tax was ever forwarded to the relevant authorities? After all if their records correctly show that no travel took place the authorities have no right to any tax do they? So Ryanair just gets to pocket money collected as tax on behalf of the state, is that not fraud / theft / just plain wrong?

Think i'll pass this on to my father, doesn't look like it's going to be simple, and he likes these kind of things

Nothing on the website, there is every sort of option on it for ways you can give them money but if it's money they owe to you then i'd say it would be easier to go up and collect it off Michael O'Leary personally

If anyone else has an answer to this can they please post it as I'm sure there are several people in the same situation (even though i'm sure we would hate to take money off the lovely ryanair)
